FBN Bank has redeemed a pledge it made to the senior men’s national football team – the Black Stars – ahead of qualification for the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar later this year.

Following an interaction with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo last year, the bank promised to offer financial support to the team if it qualified for the tournament; and as part of its annual Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (CR&S) Week, the bank has made good on its promise.

“We are making a contribution toward participation of the Ghana Black Stars in the FIFA World Cup, and this is the second part of our two-part pledge – having donated GH¢100,000 last year for the preparations toward AFCON 2022 and for qualification to the Qatar 2022 World Cup,” its Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO), Victor Yaw Asante said during a ceremony at the bank’s head office.

Representing the Minister for Youth and Sports at the event, the ministry’s Chief Accountant, Dr. Osman Tweneboah, commended the bank for fulfilling its promise – a gesture that he said speaks to the integrity of the bank’s managers.

Social impact

During the ceremony, FBNBank presented cash donations in excess of GH¢160,000 to a number of critical beneficiary partner institutions, through which the bank continues to impact the communities where it operates.

The beneficiary institutions were drawn from faith-based, youth-focused non-profits, particularly in education and health. They include Aequitas Foundation (Accra); the Village of Hope Orphanage (Gomoa Fetteh); Lifeline for Childhood Cancer Ghana (Accra); Seekapor Ghana (Accra); and Discovery Publications (Accra).

Speaking at the brief event, Mr. Asante explained that the celebration – which has as its theme for the year ‘Making Kindness a Way of Life’ – is consistent with the values espoused by its parent company, First Bank of Nigeria.

He added that it aims at reinforcing values of the bank’s SPARK (Start Performing Acts of Random Kindness) initiative through a wide range of strategically designed activities.

“Through the celebrations, we intend to positively impact our communities and encourage our staff and other stakeholders to make personal and corporate efforts to deliver hope and benefits to persons and communities in disadvantaged positions,” Mr. Asante remarked.

“The aim of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Week is to reach out and encourage staff, customers and the public to inspire and display acts of kindness – not only during the Week but as a culture that is second-nature.

“This means our expected actions are not limited to the big things which might require huge sums of money, but also include our day-to-day activities when just being extra-friendly to a colleague, neighbour, friend, sibling, customer or even a complete stranger will make the difference in a person’s day and life,” he added.

The FBN Bank MD/CEO, who doubles as the Governor of District 9102 of Rotary International, which comprises 120 Rotary Clubs and more than 3,000 Rotarians across four countries – Ghana, Niger, Benin and Togo – said the gesture confirms that the bank puts the interest of its stakeholders first.

The beneficiaries were unanimous in showing appreciation for the overwhelming act of generosity. While recounting how the support from FBN Bank has had a life-altering impact on individuals and communities, they pledged to continue using the money for its intended purpose.
