The West African Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (WAIMM) has donated an amount of GH¢90,000 to the fund committee set up for reconstruction of the Appiatse township near Bogoso in the Western Region of Ghana, following an explosive disaster incident that occurred in January, 2022.
The WAIMM was founded in 2010 and incorporated under the laws of Ghana in 2012. It provides services to professionals engaged in every part of the Mining and Oil & Gas industry across West Africa and beyond.
WAIMM is a voluntary, not-for-profit organisation with the strategic objective of deepening professionalism in the mining and petroleum industry. The WAIMM currently has membership representations in Liberia, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Senegal, Mali, Côte D’Ivoire, Sierra Leone, Niger and Ghana within the West African sub-region.
The WAIMM currently has members across all continents and has formed partnerships and collaborations with other resources-industry professional organisations across the world.
Its vision is to be highly respected for exceptional professional development, world-class networking and knowledge transfer. It is the focus of the WAIMM to enhance professional standards, provide professional development services and career development, and provide exceptional leadership in science and industry.
The primary objective of WAIMM is to represent the complete spectrum of mining, mineral and petroleum industry professionals in the West African sub-region to promote the interest of the industry across the West African sub-region and beyond. WAIMM seeks to increase professional recognition and career enhancement of members through workshops, seminars and conferences toward knowledge sharing about operational development and industry trends.
Presenting the cheque on behalf of the WAIMM to the Appiatse Support Fund Committee at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in Ghana, the executive secretary, Lawrence Omari-Mensah, explained that WAIMM offers membership and member services spanning the entire industry process and at every stage of career development – from students to everyone working in the mining and petroleum industry, to retired professionals; and it is the mission of the WAIMM to provide high quality professional input into the industry and society.
By this, the WAIMM is extending its token of friendship to the people of Appiatse and letting them know that the organisation will be with them for the needed knowledge transfer and skill development.
Mr. Omari-Mensah added that he hopes the WAIMM contribution will bring some smiles to their faces, and emphasised that WAIMM will be with them as they move on the long and painful journey of recovery and re-construction from such a never-to-be-forgotten disaster.
He said WAIMM has created the environment where the views of industry professionals are highly respected, and has also created the channel for professionals to access current and emerging trends in technology and operations.
Again, Mr. Omari-Mensah said: “WAIMM has a strong code of professional ethics; bye-laws which ensure all members carry out their duties with the highest professional standards to the benefit of the industry and society. He concluded that WAIMM is committed to demonstrating leadership in professional excellence and career advancement through innovative networking and professional development”.
Receiving the donation, Dr. Joyce Aryee – the Chairperson for the Appiatse Fund Committee, thanked the WAIMM for such a generous support and said the committee will be looking forward to working with WAIMM to bring the much-needed professional expertise during the reconstruction.
Dr. Aryee also said the committee is planning a green and sustainable reconstruction community for the Appiatse township, which will be emulated by other communities in the country.
