The Forestry Commission has donated cash and wood worth GH¢500,000 to the Appiatse Support Fund towards the reconstruction of the community.
The Commission presented a cheque for GH¢100,000 and GH¢400,000 in wood products for the reconstruction of the Appiatse Township, following mining chemical explosion earlier this year.
The Commission’s Chief Executive Officer, John Allotey, presenting the cheque to Reverend Dr Joyce Rosaline Aryee, the Chairperson of the Appiatse Support Fund Committee in Accra, noted that the Commission had already sent the wood to Appiatse.
“At the Forestry Commission we want to follow the steps taken by the President and the leadership of the Ministry. We belong to this Ministry and so if the Ministry is taking a lead role in any activity, we need to also participate. As they say charity begins at home,” Mr. Allotey said.
“As part of the reconstruction exercise, they will need wood, hence the supply of the woods,” he added.
For her part, Rev. Aryee said the donation was good news and reiterated President Nana Akuffo-Addo’s instructions to use the Fund to rebuild a green, sustainable and model community for the people of Appiatse.
She therefore commended the management of the Commission for the gesture.
Benito Owusu-Bio, deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, responsible for Lands and Forestry, expressed his appreciation on behalf of the committee for the donation.
“I would like to thank the Forestry Commission for this kind gesture. I would say it’s come at the right time especially the wood as we urgently need a lot of wood to roof the temporary structures secured from FGR mining company to house the people of Appiatse for the time being,” he said.
