The Japanese government has allocated a scholarship support grant worth JP¥323 million, equivalent to US$2.1million, to the government of Ghana.

The initiative is part of a project dubbed Japan Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) and is aimed at offering study opportunities for government officials to further their studies in selected academic disciplines.

Ambassador of Japan to Ghana, Mochizuki Hisanobu, at the Exchange of Notes signing ceremony mentioned that the Republic of Japan and Ghana have a long-standing mutually beneficial bilateral relation, and his government is committed to continuously supporting and promoting the country’s human resource development and economic growth .

Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, expressed his sincere heartfelt appreciation to the government of Japan for their continuous support – mentioning that the support will go a long way to advance human resource development and good governance practice in the public sector.

The JDS project offers 12 two-year Master’s courses and one Ph.D. course at Japanese universities for young government officials from Ghana to pursue graduate studies so as to actively engage and accelerate implementation of social and economic development plans as future leaders of Ghana.

The universities they will be attending are Kobe University, Ritsumeikan University, Nagasaki University, International Christian University and International University of Japan.

Japan has been offering the JDS scholarship opportunities to government officials  since 2012, and scaled up the programme in 2020 by increasing the number of Master’s course scholarships from 10 to 12 and adding one Ph.D. course scholarship. Approximately 117 young Ghanaian officials have had the opportunity to study in Japan since the programme’s launch in 2012.
