Poetry Corner: The Ant and the Elephant

0

Once upon a time in the Animal Kingdom

There lived the Ant and the Elephant

They sheltered in the same camp

And were clothed in identical feathers

For they were bred by the same founding fathers

They were brewed from the same pot for development

And they concurred with the same plot in freedom

Once, they had a little beef to grind

But they allowed the beef to become bitter

And to linger and to fester

When the beef peaked

It mounted the hill to reach the hilt

An ugly head reared for the kill

–a showdown of a rare kind

Then in search of a battle of minds

The Elephant hopped unto the apex of the Ivory Tower

While the Ant scaled up unto the crest of the Ant hill

Thereupon would lie the strength of the Elephant

And the wisdom of the Ant

–a showdown came to mind

The Ant consulted a colony of Ants

To plan a battle formation

To plan a stranglehold

In the throat of the Elephant’s family and friends

In the stronghold of the remaining saints

–of the Elephant

A showdown of the giants

The Elephant threw its weight about

After fanning and funding the ego of the most favourite son

–the most favoured one

But fuming and hounding out the patience of John

…the genteel, waiting one

Still, “the battle is of the Lord!”

A war cry that sang out loud

The Ant ran into a rage and a rant

It raved, it revved up…and it panted

It moved in, it moved about…and it moved on

What was in the heart of the Ant?

The Ant rebelled…and oh!

It opted out!

Now, “the battle is the Ant’s”

And so it happened that

An Ant colony from the family of the Elephant

Embarked upon a flying mission of defection

Aimed at the Elephant’s ears and eyes

For teary eyes

At its nose and its nostrils

For a runny nose

At its knuckles and ankles

To bend the Elephant down to its knees

At its tusk and its tonsils

For a punchy dose of Elephantiasis

After many days of frantic consideration

After many rounds of fanatic deliberation

An Ant’s defection was effected…for further infection

And a showdown to break up the Eleph-ant

Rang out in the most Patriotic declaration!
