Sustainable management is the responsibility of water engineers

Accra has witnessed the Association of Ghana Water Limited Engineers (AGWLE) launching, whose members are tasked with assisting in ensuring sustainable water management throughout the country.

The Association is affiliated with the Ghana Institute of Engineers (GhIE) and comprises over 300 members. The Association will seek and promote the welfare and capacity-building of its members toward improved services delivery.

The group was inaugurated at the Maiden Engineers Conference, where a 28-member executive body was sworn-in and standard operating procedures for distribution were launched.

The two-day conference role was to deliberate on issues relating to work of engineers, and held on the theme ‘Advancing the role of engineers in GWL for a Sustainable Future’.

David K. Nyante, Executive Director-Ghana Institute of Engineers (GhIE), launched the group and swore its executives into office – indicating that access to clean and safe drinking water is precious to human life and public health, thus the need to engineers to play their roles well in ensuring sustainability.

He said the technical expertise, innovation and dedication of GWCL engineers are essential in achieving the goals of GWCL and well-being of all Ghanaians.

In building a sustainable future, he said, there is a need to nurture the next generation of engineers by inspiring and encouraging young people to pursue careers in engineering and environmental sciences. He said the Association and GWCL should invest in the continuous learning and professional development of engineers, to enable them keep up with evolving technologies and best practices.

Mr. Nyante also called for collaboration between the public and private sectors; advocacy for policies and regulations; and participation in addressing challenges related to water pollution and climate change.

GWCL Managing Director Dr. Clifford Braimah said the Association will help promote the the profession’s ethics, which will contribute to the company’s overall service delivery quality. Noting the crucial role engineers play in the company’s world, he said they are instrumental in addressing challenges in the country’s various infrastucture . He pledged management’s support to the Association, and asked that its members remain committed to their respective responsibilities in the company.

The AGWLE president, Richard Appiah Otoo, said members will work to achieve the company and Association’s mandate for sustainable water management. He said elevating the company’s image and resolving the challenges at hand are matters of great importance.

President Appiah Otoo said: “True to our oath, we will work to create an environment that recognises the vital contributions of engineers to our organisation and Ghana as a whole. We will actively promote professionalism and excellence within our engineering community.

“Engineers have accomplished remarkable feats throughout history, from ancient aqueducts to modern space shuttles, and we are fully capable of solving the challenges of pipe leakages and other issues,” he added.
