Central University (CU) with its main campus at Miotso in the Ningo Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region on Thursday, (January 7, 2021) benefitted from the ongoing Ministry of Education (MoE) and Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL) disinfection programme.

The exercise, which was against the coronavirus disease (Covid-19), was also to pave way for the safe reopening of the university scheduled for Saturday, January 9, 2021.

It followed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s directive during his 21st COVID-19 address to the nation that schools from basic to tertiary institutions be disinfected before reopening.

At exactly 8:58 a.m., Zoomlion disinfection crew begun disinfecting facilities including lecture halls, halls of residences, administration block, library, etc., and all the open spaces of the university.

Speaking to the media, the Zoomlion Ghana Limited General Manager (GM), Tema Zone, Seth Ocran, said the essence of the exercise was to make the universities safe for “habitation,” particularly in the wake of the Covid.

“In the light of the schools reopening and looking at the fact that a lot of surfaces have been touched by students, teaching and non-teaching staff members, it was imperative that we come back to disinfect and make the Central University safe for the students,” he explained.

However, he admonished the students, teaching and non-teaching staff members of the university to strictly continue complying with the Covid protocols.

“This means that our students and the teaching staff members must observe the Covid safety measures by wearing nose masks, regularly washing hands, use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers and practising social/physical distancing,” he advised.
Mr Ocran used the opportunity to assure parents that following the disinfection exercise the various tertiary institutions were safe for academic work.

In this wise, he entreated parents to support their children with Covid personal protective equipment (PPE). This, he stressed, will help safeguard their children against the virus.

Valley View University (VVU) was the next to be disinfected by the Zoomlion disinfection team.
The MoE and Zoomlion on Wednesday (January 6, 2021) begun the mass disinfection of tertiary institutions in the country in preparation of their reopening on Saturday, January 9, 2021.
