Barcelona to offer Messi lifetime deal

0

Messi, 30, agreed a four-year deal with Barcelona in July, although has not officially signed it yet.

Grau, speaking at the club’s annual general meeting, said the Argentine forward would be offered a similar deal to the one Barca’s Spanish midfielder Andres Iniesta signed this month.

“Messi signed a four-year deal in June, but the club will offer him a lifetime contract,” Grau told club members.

“The idea is for Leo, who has been here since he was little, to stay here for life, as he is an icon. After he finishes playing we want him to remain linked to the club.”

Government borrowing at lowest September level for 10 years

0

Britain saw its smallest budget deficit for any September in the last 10 years, according to official figures.

Last month’s deficit stood at £5.902bn, down almost 11% compared with the same month last year, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

With many economists having forecast a deficit of about £6.5bn, the news will be a boost for Chancellor Philip Hammond ahead of next month’s Budget.

The deficit for August was also revised down by about £1bn to £4.716bn

September’s figures marked the third straight month in which UK public finances were better than analysts had forecast.

The ONS said public sector net debt, excluding state-owned banks, had increased by £145.2bn since September last year to £1,785.3bn, equivalent to 87.2% of gross domestic product.

A Treasury spokesman said: “Whilst we’ve made great progress getting the deficit down by over two thirds, government borrowing is still far too high at over £150m a day.

“We will continue to take a balanced approach that deals with our debts and allows us to invest in our public services.”

Bechem United 1-0 Great Olympics-Toure’s early minute strike sends Wonder Club into relegation

0

Bechem United retained their Ghana Premier League status after recording a 1-0 win over Great Olympics on Match Day 30 at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park on Sunday.

The breakthrough arrived after just three minutes on the clock, as Amed Toure fired home from close range to hand the Hunters the lead.

Olympics had come close earlier when Guantohou Kaplaka fired a stunning effort into the waiting arms of goalkeeper Ernest Adu after dispossessing Bechem United defender Daniel Egyin just outside the 18-yard box.

In the second half, the Dade Boys pushed for the equalizer but the steady defense of Bechem United stood firm to their threats.

The visitors came in strongly mid-way through the second half by attacking the Hunters and went close to leveling the score line through Douglas Opoku but his thumping header grazed the upright.

Bechem saw out Olympics incessant threats late on to record a 1-0 win to retain their league status.

WHO cancels Robert Mugabe goodwill ambassador role

0

The World Health Organization has revoked the appointment of Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe as a goodwill ambassador following a widespread outcry.

“I have listened carefully to all who have expressed their concerns,” WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement.

He had previously praised Zimbabwe for its commitment to public health.

But critics pointed out that Zimbabwe’s healthcare system had collapsed under Mr Mugabe’s 30-year rule.

Staff often go without pay, medicines are in short supply, and Mr Mugabe, who has outlived the average life expectancy in his country by three decades, travels abroad for medical treatment.

Mr Tedros said he had consulted with the Zimbabwean government and decided that rescinding Mr Mugabe’s position was “in the best interests of” the WHO.

He said he remained “firmly committed to working with all countries and their leaders” to build universal health care.

Mr Tedros, elected in May under the slogan “let’s prove the impossible is possible” had said he hoped Mr Mugabe would use his goodwill ambassador role to “influence his peers in the region”.

But the appointment was met by a wave of surprise and condemnation. The UK government, the Canadian prime minister, the Wellcome Trust, the NCD Alliance, UN Watch, the World Heart Federation, Action Against Smoking and Zimbabwean lawyers and social media users were among those who criticised the decision.

The BBC’s Andrew Harding in Johannesburg reports that Mr Mugabe’s supporters are likely to see this episode as Western meddling in Africa.

Mens grooming, hair treatment and hairstyle trends

0

I spent the last week of August and first week of October 2017 in Johannesburg and Pretoria working on a cultural event organized by a group of Ghanaians and South African nationals in partnership with the Ghanaian High Commission in Pretoria. It was a platform to showcase the rich Ghanaian culture to the rest of the world through a series of events including musical performances, exhibition of arts and craft and workshops on tourism in Ghana.

Though not my first time in one of Africa’s most developed (infrastructure and economy) countries, one of the several things that struck me was how much importance South Africans, not excluding men in certain suburbs across the country placed on their grooming needs – haircut, styling and general looks.

Mathew Kabelo, is a trained editor and public relations professional who works with South African Broadcasting Corporation, the state broadcaster which provides 19 radio stations and five television platforms broadcasting across South Africa. Mathew, who I have known for almost four years tried to justify the ‘craze’ about looks in South Africa and why men aren’t left out.

“I hold in my hands the Ultimate Guide publication on fashion and grooming and it covers just about everything you need to know about men’s hairstyles and haircuts. Mine and just like several other colleagues of mine that have purchased this guide will focus on men’s hairstyle trend and what is in style in2017.

However, you can add a twist to it to make you very unique in your own way. It is just a necessity we have come to discover and not sure we can depart from it. You are as good as your looks and so why don’t you invest time, energy and money into that to get the desires satisfaction. That is what drives several men around the country to be particular about their looks, from what they wear to their hair style,” he said.

Back to the motherland and I decided to engage Christian Dordoe, the founder and owner of C- Dors Executive Grooming, who is popularly known as the Celebrity Barber on the same subject. I made my way to ‘Rasta’, an area along the bush road (behind Trade Fair, from La to Teshie) to meet up with Christian at the latest branch of his chain of grooming centers.

After introducing the topic, Christian indicated to me that Ghanaians have become more cautious about their looks and seem to pay attention to that.

“People come into my place and they start to engage you and move on to talk more about the service you will render to them and what specifically they want. They want you to be aware of their face shape and hair type, then discuss choosing a hair length, beard grooming, and hair products. Their main aim is to help you get a haircut and style that looks great and make them feel better,” he added.

Men’s hair has experienced a renaissance in the last few years, with more styles and products available than ever before. That’s the good news. The bad news is it can be overwhelming, especially if you’ve had the same haircut for a long time and are uncertain about trying something new. A new cut could be better but it could also be worse

According to Christian, “you don’t need to know everything about the hair to get a great cut and style. You are seeing a professional though unfortunately we don’t have a lot of them in Ghana. It is their business to not only know the trends but to adapt a style for different hair types and face shapes. So if you want a new haircut but don’t know what to get, the most important thing is working with a barber or stylist you trust.

There have been several instances when people have come in with photos of haircuts they want. I have always welcomed that as it gives you an idea of what exactly the client wants when they don’t know the name of the haircut they want.”

About how to find a great barber or stylist, Christian jokingly said: “First, ask your friends, especially if there is someone with consistently good hair. Also, if you spot a fresh cut on the street, you can always ask them where they got it. It’s a huge compliment so don’t be shy. Online reviews can also be helpful but it is rare in Ghana so that isn’t an option you can rely on.”

He further stated that: “all of these tips depend on having a good barber or stylist. There are so many of them out there, it can be difficult to know where to start. You can decide if you prefer a barber or salon environment. One isn’t better than the other but they are different. Barbers have usually more masculine environments, provide straight shaves and beard grooming, take less time, and tend to be cheaper.

Salons will be unisex, sometimes offer appointments for hour long cuts that provide more time to discuss what you want, and provide a more pampered experience. You can also have an home or office appointment where you will be treated from the comfort of your house or work station. An important distinction can be a barber versus a stylist but who you trust to cut your hair is very key.”

It has become obvious that men’s grooming is a polite way of talking about cleansing, hair removal, and managing facial hair. While your body requires grooming from head to toe, this is about facial hair, shaving, and skin care.

Follow these simple men’s grooming tips and you’ll know you look good. That combination of grooming and confidence will make you unstoppable in anything you do. Whether you have a beard, go clean-shaven, or somewhere in-between, you need to take care of the rest of your face too.

According to Christian, he will on any day advice people (men) to use hair products for great results. “Nine times out of 10, perhaps even 99 times out of a 100, the answer is yes. Why? Even short hair needs some hold to look its best. The shortest buzz cuts are exempt but anything longer will benefit from the shaping, texture, and finish that hair products provide. That is just for basic hairstyles.

Products also allow you to create any style you can come up with from the hottest slick styles to gravity-defying spikes to coveted messy hair. Hair products also make the most of your hair type, controlling thick hair, adding volume and fullness to fine hair, and defining curls,” he added.

2017 U17 FIFA World Cup: Samuel Fabin laments on poor officiating after Mali defeat

0

Black Starlets coach Samuel Paa Kwesi Fabin has expressed his disappointment in officiating following his side’s 2-1 to Mali in the quarter finals of the ongoing U-17 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana were booted out of the competition after losing to a well organised Malian side at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Guwahati on Saturday.

Drame Hadji put the Eagles ahead in the 15th minute from a close range before Ghana’s goalkeeper Ibrahim Danladi’s 60th minute blunder handed the Malians a two-goal lead.

However, in-between the two goals, Ibrahim Sulley thought he had leveled the score line for the Black Starlets after his low shot beat goalkeeper Youssouf Koita at his near post but the goal was ruled out after Algerian referee Medhi Charef adjudged a foul on Fode Konate by Kudus Mohammed in the build up to the goal.

A 70th minute penalty strike by Kudus Mohammed proved to be a mere consolation for the two-time World champions.

Speaking after the game, coach Fabin expressed his frustration at the decision to disallow Sulley’s strike, which he believed could have turned things around for his side.

“Everything went right, we scored a perfect goal and it was disallowed. I don’t know what to say again,” he told reporters.

South Africa expects to renew Total’s offshore exploration right

0

“It is expected to be granted in the second quarter of 2018,” Lindiwe Mekwe, acting CEO of the Petroleum Agency of SA, told Reuters.

France’s Total stopped drilling off South Africa’s southern coast in 2014 after experiencing mechanical problems with its rig in rough sea conditions.

It operates Block 11B/12B, where it holds a 50 percent stake with CNR International, a subsidiary of Canadian Natural Resources Ltd.

Mali slightly ahead on recent form against Ghana in West African contest

0

Ghana will be looking to regain its formidable form of the ’90s when it takes on last edition’s runner-up Mali in the first quarterfinal of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup at the Indira Gandhi Stadium here on Saturday.

The match-up of the two remaining African sides will be interesting considering their achievements in the youth level World Cup.

Practically ruling the final decade of the last century, Ghana had a medal in each of the five editions falling within that period. Beginning with the maiden crown in 1991, it reached four successive finals picking up two titles and as many runner-up spots before finishing a creditable third in the 1999 edition.

Mali made its first big impression finishing runner-up against Nigeria in the last edition (2015) in Chile. It had never progressed beyond the quarterfinals prior to that.

However, on the scale of performances in the recent past, Mali have emerged a stronger team. They were continental champions in the last two editions, winning the CAF U-17 Cup of Nations in 2015 and 2017. This year they beat Ghana by a solitary goal to be the best in Africa and will look to extend that supremacy.

In this tournament, Mali has been better on the offensive, while Ghana has been more resolute in defence.

The African champion’s consistency in attacking is evident in the regularity with which it has found the target.

After its 3-2 loss to Paraguay, Mali made a spectacular improvement scoring 11 goals in the next three matches, including its 5-1 win over Iraq in the pre-quarterfinals.

Mali’s performance has been marked by robust flank play with players like Lassana N’Diaye, Abdoulaye Diaby, Mamadou Samake and Salam Jiddou being prominent.

“We know each other very well and are prepared for the match. It will be a good one to watch,” Jiddou had reasons to predict a close contest.

Mali will be looking at N’Diaye, who shares the top spot in the scoring chart with France’s Amine Gouiri, to remain as effective in the striking zone.

Ghana’s progress has not been as spectacular, but the team managed a good defensive record conceding just one goal in four matches. Ever since its 1-0 loss to the USA in the opening match, Ghana has defended better than most other sides in the tournament.

The team has been fielding on an average five specialist defenders with the captain Eric Ayiah as the lone man in attack. The Ghanaian approach till now has been more about surprising the opponent with speedy counterattacks.

Injury to defender Bismark Owusu is the only concern for Ghana, which again has five players under the booking cloud. “It’s payback time,” Najeeb Yakubu sounded the bugle ahead of the big West African duel.
