The Minister-designate for Greater Accra Region, Henry Quartey, is optimistic that commencement of the land digitisation process by the Lands Commission and Registrar-General’s Department will help resolve land dispute issues in Ghana.
He is of the view that the new process will help reduce issues of land guards and violence which characterise land disputes.
Answering questions from the Appointments Committee of parliament, Mr. Quartey said as chairman of the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) he will collaborate with the relevant stakeholders to resolve land dispute issues in the region.
“It is my hope and prayer that they will be able to expedite action on the processes of land acquisition; and once it is done, it will be tuned to reduce the issues of land guards and also multiple sales of lands,” he said.
He assured that he will engage stakeholders, traditional councils and land owners to restore confidence in the system.
Mr. Quartey said due to the disorganised plotting of lands at the Lands Commission, local authorities are unable to enforce the planning laws in their various districts.
“Indeed, I have to work hand in hand with the Lands and Forestry Minister so that they can expedite the work they are doing on the plotting lands in a digitised manner,” he said.
He said after the digitisation, the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) will then ensure that proper planning in their respective districts is adhered to.
