The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has provided four mechanised boreholes to serve the Dua Junior High School and surrounding communities in Bongo, in the Upper East Region of Ghana.
The Executive Secretary of PURC, Dr. Shafic Suleman, on Thursday, July 17, 2025, led an inspection of the water facilities which were installed as part of the commission’s pro-poor water projects aimed at improving access to clean and sustainable water.
The boreholes, located on the premises of Dua JHS, are equipped with a 10,000-litre overhead tank, three low taps and two overhead taps. The system is currently serving approximately 4,500 people in the Bongo Dua community, as well as 100 students enrolled at the school.
Dr. Suleman expressed satisfaction with the school’s management of the facility and praised the headmistress and her staff for prioritising student access to the water supply. “These pro-poor water projects align with PURC’s mission to improve water service delivery by expanding access to clean and sustainable water, thereby supporting Ghana’s broader development goals,” he stated.
The Headmistress of the school, Madam Atota Suzana, welcomed the intervention, noting that the borehole has significantly improved conditions for teaching and learning. “The project was strategically placed within the school to improve the hand-washing culture and eliminate the need for students to leave school premises in search of water,” she said. “On behalf of the staff and students, I pledge to ensure the facility is well-maintained for long-term use.”
During the visit, students held placards with messages such as “Water is life”, “He who provides water saves life”, “Thank you for saving us from crossing the road to drink water”, and “We are forever grateful.”
The Executive Secretary also visited other pro-poor water projects in the Bongo Dua community as part of his tour of the Upper East Region.
Dr. Suleman was accompanied by a delegation from the PURC Head Office, including the Director of Regional Operations, Consumers Service, Alhaji Jabaru Abukari; Director of Energy Services and Performance Monitoring, Ing. Frederick Oblitey; Director of Research and Corporate Affairs, Dr. Eric Obutey; Deputy Director of Northern Operations, Monitoring and Evaluation, Kweku Tuffuor; Head of Corporate Affairs, Dr. Robert Tia Abdulai Aziz; Ephraim Atubuoarah; and Fauzia Tanko.
