–Heart of Lions, Kotoko & Hearts of Oak seal Top-four
Bibiani Gold Stars FC has won its first-ever major glory by clinching the historic 2024/25 Ghana Premier League (GPL) title on Sunday.
Gold Stars’ triumph crowns a remarkable three-year period of dominance by clubs from the Western Region, as it becomes the third team from the area to win the GPL title in the past three seasons.
The Miners now follow in the footsteps of FC Samartex 1996 – champions of the 2023/24 season, and Medeama SC, who lifted the trophy in 2022/23.
The Miners completed the fairytale season by demolishing Accra Lions 4-0 at a raucous Duns Park.
Abdul Farouk Amoaful opened the scoring just four minutes into the game to ignite celebrations among the home fans. Kelvin Oppong doubled the advantage in the 19th minute, laying the foundation for a memorable finale.
Second-half goals from Samuel Kumi (73′) and Frank Amankwah (90′) capped off a dominant performance that saw the title secured with a three-point cushion.
Nations FC pending ruling
Despite an impressive campaign, Nations had to settle for second place, just behind the newly crowned champions as they await a judicial decision. The club that concluded its campaign with 60 points is under investigation for abandoning its penultimate league match against newly promoted Basake Holy Stars.
The game, which ended in controversy after a second penalty was awarded to Holy Stars, saw Nations walk off the pitch on the instructions of club owner Dr. Kwame Kyei.
Basake Holy Stars have since lodged a formal complaint, requesting that the GFA award them three points and three goals, per league regulations.
Should the GFA Disciplinary Committee uphold the appeal, Nations FC would suffer a three-point deduction, dropping to 57 points and sliding to fifth place.
In that event, Heart of Lions would rise to second place, Asante Kotoko would claim third; and Hearts of Oak, currently tied with Kotoko on 58 points but trailing on head-to-head record, would leapfrog into fourth, edging Nations FC out of the top-four bracket.
Such a ruling would come as a major blow to Nations FC, whose remarkable campaign would be overshadowed by a single, ill-fated decision. For Hearts of Oak, however, the verdict could offer a late but welcome boost, potentially rescuing a season that has seen its fair share of ups and downs.
Hearts of Oak sealed the likely top-four spot on the final day of the season with a 1-0 win over champions Samartex on Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Medeama SC wrapped up a frustrating campaign with a 2-1 home defeat to Berekum Chelsea at the TnA Stadium in Tarkwa. Vincent Klu Adjei opened the scoring for the visitors before Kingsley Braye equalised. But former Medeama striker Kofi Ansu Patrick had the final say, scoring the winner five minutes from time to silence the home fans. Medeama finished eighth, while Chelsea ended the season in 12th position.
Aduana FC ended on a high, sealing a comfortable 3-1 win over newly promoted Basake Holy Stars. Despite the defeat, Holy Stars managed to avoid relegation in their debut top-flight season.
Accra Lions, Legon Cities and Nsoatreman FC Relegated
Accra Lions have been relegated from the Premier League, joining Legon Cities and Nsoatreman FC as the three clubs to drop out of the top flight at the end of the 2024/25 season.
The Lions’ demotion was confirmed following a heavy 4-0 defeat to newly crowned champions Gold Stars FC at the Duns Park in Bibiani on Sunday. The loss marked a disappointing end to a turbulent campaign for the club, which finished in 15th place, just one year after achieving an impressive second-place finish in the 2023/24 season
Legon Cities were relegated from the GPL following a crushing 4–1 home defeat to Nations FC at the University of Ghana in week 31. This defeat was not just a loss; it marked the end of Legon Cities’ journey, with the club accumulating just 25 points from 34 games.
Nsoatreman FC, on the other hand, withdrew from the league midway through the season, resulting in its automatic relegation.
