The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has commissioned 15 brand new heavy-duty trucks at the Port of Tema to enhance logistics operations and support rising cargo volumes.

The new vehicles form part of GPHA’s broader strategy to modernise port infrastructure, improve cargo handling efficiency and strengthen Tema Port’s competitiveness in the West African sub-region.

At a short ceremony held in Tema, the Director-General of GPHA, Brigadier-General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, said the trucks would improve internal cargo movement and help reduce turnaround times at the port.

“These trucks will significantly boost our ability to move cargo efficiently within the port area, which is critical to maintaining Tema Port’s leadership in the region,” he said. He also stressed the importance of maintaining the equipment properly to ensure their long-term use.

Director of the Port of Tema, Tebon Zuma Esq., said the new trucks come with advanced safety and emissions features, reflecting GPHA’s commitment to meeting international environmental standards.

Mr. Zuma announced that an additional 15 trucks are expected within the next three weeks, bringing the total to 30 in the second quarter of the year. In total, GPHA plans to procure 100 trucks and over a dozen reach stackers by the end of the year.

“These trucks are a symbol of our commitment to operational excellence and customer satisfaction. As port traffic grows, we must continue investing in the tools and systems that support efficient logistics,” he added.

He further noted that the trucks will help reduce delays, streamline cargo transfers and improve delivery timelines within the port. They will be used for container handling, internal haulage and other logistics operations.

Mr. Zuma also highlighted GPHA’s ongoing staff training and capacity building to ensure the fleet is managed to the highest professional standards.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the move, saying improved logistics at Tema Port will ease trade flow and reduce supply chain bottlenecks.

The trucks are expected to begin full operations immediately.
