The Lancaster University Ghana has held a career fair which aims at bridging the gab between academia and the job market, while equipping them with important skills to boost their employability after graduation.
The event themed “ From campus to corporate; connecting talent with opportunity” which took place at the university’s campus in Accra was attended by major industry experts and career development professionals who provided guidelines on topics such as Law, Political and International relations, Business Studies, Computer Science among others.
In an interview, Careers and Internship Coordinator- Lancaster University Ghana, Tawfiq Mohammed underscored the importance of grooming students and exposing them to what the job market looks like before they graduate.
He said, “Most students graduate and find it difficult to identify themselves with a particular profession when seeking jobs. This leads to discouragement and loss of interest. When students are impacted with the knowledge on what is on the job market, it makes it easier for them to identify themselves.”
He further indicated that an Alumni page has been created to help follow up on students of the school after graduation in order to make sure that they are able to identify career paths they are comfortable with.
Richard Obeng, Law Lecturer at Lancaster University Ghana also reiterated the need to train and equip students with real world information of the job market before they leave school.
“A law graduate doesn’t necessarily have to become a lawyer—there are numerous career opportunities within the legal field that students can explore, therefore as a call for better guidance and awareness to help students identify their interests within the broader law space.”
