Ho Airport, once envisioned as a gateway to economic development and a beacon of hope for the Volta Region, is poised for a new chapter.
With an increasing interest in domestic travel, tourism and business expansion, there is a compelling case for establishing flight services between Ho, Tamale and Kumasi, alongside the introduction of helicopter services connecting key tourist destinations such as the Amedzofe Mountains, Wli Waterfalls and Afadjato Mountain.
Developing these routes will not only boost the local economy but also create a strategic transport hub that connects the northern and southern parts of Ghana.

Background on Ho Airport’s construction
The construction of Ho Airport was part of government’s broader initiative to improve domestic air travel and boost regional economic development. The project was initiated under the leadership of then-president John Dramani Mahama as part of a national airport infrastructure expansion plan.
The airport, located in the Volta Region’s capital of Ho, was designed to provide a gateway for easier travel and trade between the region and other parts of Ghana. Construction began in September 2015 and was completed in 2017, with funding from government and support from Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).
The airport boasts a 1,900-metre runway suitable for medium-sized aircraft and includes a modern terminal building, control towerand other essential facilities.
The goal behind the Airport’s construction was to stimulate economic activity in the region, particularly through tourism, agriculture and trade. The Volta Region, known for its rich cultural heritage and tourist attractions such as the Wli Waterfalls and Mount Afadjato, was seen as having significant untapped potential. Despite its completion, the airport has seen limited commercial use partly due to low passenger demand and limited airline operations, leaving its full potential unrealised.
Revitalising the airport and establishing flight routes to key domestic destinations like Tamale and Kumasi, along with helicopter services to major tourist attractions, presents a viable opportunity to breathe new life into the facility and broader regional economy.
A beacon of hope for Volta Region
Ho Airport, with its state-of-the-art infrastructure, has long been a symbol of the Volta Region’s untapped potential. Situated in a region known for its vibrant culture, scenic landscapes and rich history, the airport was intended to open up opportunities for tourism, trade and investment.
However, since its opening the airport has struggled to attract consistent commercial flights. This underutilisation represents a missed opportunity to spur growth and development in the region.
Revitalising the airport and introducing regular flights between Ho, Tamale, Kumasi, Wa and Cape-coast would make it easier for people to travel across the country. The flight routes would connect major regional hubs, bringing business travellers, tourists and government officials to the Volta Region while also facilitating the movement of goods and services.
Unlocking tourism potential with helicopter services
Volta Region boasts some of the most stunning natural attractions in Ghana. The Amedzofe Mountains, with their breathtaking views and cool climate, offer a perfect escape from the heat of the lowlands. Wli Waterfall, the highest waterfall in West Africa, is a natural wonder that draws visitors from far and wide. Afadjato Mountain, the highest peak in Ghana, provides an adventurous hiking experience.
Despite the region’s rich tourism potential, access to these attractions remains a challenge. Helicopter services linking Ho to Amedzofe, Wli and Afadjato would revolutionise tourism in the region.
These services would offer a convenient and luxurious mode of transport, allowing tourists to experience the Volta Region’s beauty in a way that is currently not possible. By shortening travel times and offering a unique aerial perspective of the region’s landscapes, these helicopter routes would attract high-end tourists and boost the local tourism industry.
A Viable Business Opportunity
Establishing flight and helicopter services between these key cities and tourist sites represents a sound business opportunity. The demand for domestic travel in Ghana is on the rise, driven by a growing middle-class, increased business activities and a desire for local tourism experiences. The Volta Region, with its untapped tourism potential, is well-positioned to benefit from this trend.
Moreover, the northern cities of Tamale and Kumasi are important commercial and cultural centres, making them attractive destinations for both business and leisure travellers. By connecting Ho to these cities, airlines and helicopter service providers could tap into a lucrative market that is currently underserved.
In addition to passenger services, these routes could support cargo transport; providing farmers and businesses in Volta Region with faster access to markets in other parts of the country. This would have a significant impact on the region’s agricultural sector, which is a major contributor to the local economy.
Revitalising Ho Airport: A Call to Action
For the Ho Airport to realise its full potential, there is need for a concerted effort from both government and the private sector. The establishment of flight routes between Ho, Tamale and Kumasi, along with helicopter services to key tourist destinations, would require collaboration between airlines, tour operators and local authorities. However, the long-term benefits of such an investment are clear.
Revitalising Ho Airport would not only improve regional connectivity but also stimulate economic growth, create jobs and enhance the Volta Region’s attractiveness as a destination for tourists and investors alike. It would also serve as a symbol of government’s commitment to developing the region and ensuring that all parts of Ghana benefit from the country’s economic growth.
Conclusion
Volta Region is ready to take flight
By investing in flight services between Ho, Tamale and Kumasi – and introducing helicopter services connecting Ho to the region’s top tourist attractions – we can unlock the full potential of Ho Airport and turn it into a vibrant hub of activity.
The region’s future depends on bold ideas and decisive action – and this is the perfect opportunity to create lasting change. Let us seize this moment and turn Ho Airport into the beacon of hope that Volta Region has long awaited.
