The National Insurance Commission (NIC), insurance companies and other stakeholders have been encouraged to increase awareness on insurance in order to increase penetration.

This will ensure that the public is made aware of the numerous benefits of acquiring insurance to protect their life, property and investments, among others.

Insurance penetration in the country hovers at two percent of gross domestic product (GDP). This woeful level of penetration has been blamed on non-payment of claims and lack of good faith on the part of the public.

Therefore, in an effort to demystify some of these assertions and to increase penetration levels, Star Assurance Ghana has held an Insurance Clinic in Accra to address issues pertaining to insurance in the country.

The four-day event started on International Insurance Awareness Day, 28th of June and ended last Saturday, July 1st, and saw staff of Star Assurance attempting to answer questions from the general public on insurance products and why they should acquire them.

Staff also educated the public on the company’s various products and service offerings.

Head of Alternative Distribution Channels of Star Assurance, Bridget Opoku Sarkodie, highlighting objectives of the clinic, indicated that this Insurance Clinic was part of activities to mark its 38th anniversary and also help increase awareness on insurance to boost the seemingly dull industry.

“The purpose of insurance awareness month is to raise knowledge about insurance and showcase the benefits to stakeholders, the general public and anyone interested in insurance matters to make as many people as possible aware of the importance of having insurance.

“June 28th is International Insurance Awareness Day, and as a company that has an interest in growth of the industry there is a need for us to contribute our quota in the general agenda of the insurance industry to increase insurance awareness and penetration rates in the country. The need for the above has fuelled the idea of leveraging Insurance Awareness Day to reach out to our clients and the general insuring public. The Insurance Clinic will attend to their insurance needs and also educate them on insurance in a very special way,” she said.
