ASA Savings and Loans Limited, in partnership with the Forestry Commission, has started the cultivation of over 2,000 tree seedlings across the country.

Casia, akyee, neem trees, oranges, mango, avocado and coconut are some of the species for the tree-planting exercise.

The maiden edition of the tree-planting exercise began at Koforidua Prisons Quarters and its environs in the Eastern Region.

David Amevor, Koforidua Area Manager of ASA Savings and Loans Limited, explained to the media that the tree-planting exercise is to provide shade, regulate temperature, help to fight climate crisis, reduce soil erosion, repair damaged ecosystems, among others.

He said the tree-planting exercise is going to be done annually, adding: “Trees provide food, check erosion, contribute to global reforestation efforts, among others”.

According to him, the tree-planting exercise is to support government’s Green Ghana Project and forms part of ASA Savings corporate social responsibility.

“Since most of the trees in the forest reserves have been cut down, it is very important for the individuals and groups of people to plant more,” Mr. Amevor added.

Clement Angmortey, Range Manager of the Forestry Commission at Koforidua, advised churches, organisations, women’s groups, and the youth to cultivate seedlings, such as mango, avocado, neem tree, coconut, among others, in their environment.

“These trees are to provide shade, are good for our climate change,” he added, advising the Prisons authority to take good care of the trees and provide fencing around it. He said currently, individuals and groups of people are getting to understand the need for tree planting, and further encouraged all to embrace the Green Ghana Project, which is still on-going in the country.
