Republic Bank appoints Akua Oduraa Botchway as new company secretary

Republic Bank (Ghana) PLC has appointed Mrs. Akua Oduraa Botchway as the new company secretary.

She assumed the role effective January 1, 2023, following the Bank of Ghana’s approval.

Akua Oduraa Botchway is a lawyer by profession and has over 20 years of cross-functional private and public service experience in Legal, Corporate Governance, Risk Management, Supplier Engagement Management, and Customer Service. She has over 13 years of cumulative banking experience spanning her career.



Before joining the Republic Bank Ghana Group, she worked as a private Legal Practitioner and consulted for Kobaka Chambers and A.C.A. Law Consult, respectively. She has also worked at Barclays Bank Ghana Limited – now Absa Bank, Prudential Bank Limited, Internal Revenue Services – now GRA, and Apex Law Consult.

She holds a B.A in Law and Political Science from the University of Ghana, and an MBA in Finance from the Coventry University, UK.  She is a Notary Public and holds a BL from the Ghana School of Law.

Mrs. Botchway is a member of the Ghana Bar Association. She will be a member of the Executive Management Committee (EXCO) and have oversight responsibilities of the Legal and Regulatory Compliance Department and the Corporate Secretariat.

She was appointed for the position after the retirement of B. Ama Amoah who has been with the Bank for over 16 years.

With a career spanning over 40 years of hard work, fortitude, professionalism and integrity, Mrs. Amoah, has worked with various Managing Directors in Republic Bank – former HFC Bank – toward the achievement of many laurels within the Corporate Governance, Legal & Regulatory Compliance, Mortgage and Banking space, owing to her significant exposure and expertise in those fields.

  1. Ama Amoah, prior to her position as the company secretary, headed the Mortgage and then the Legal Departments of the then HFC Bank.

In her capacity as General Manager of the bank, she was mostly responsible for the Corporate Secretariat with oversight of the Legal & Regulatory Compliance Department, the Administration & Premises Department, the Compliance Department, the Human Resources Department, the Marketing & Communications Department, and the subsidiary – HFC Realty Ltd. Co.

Mrs. Amoah previously worked as a Regeneration Lawyer with the Legal Division of the London Borough of Hackney, London – UK, where she was instrumental in several major economic regeneration projects, providing legal representation and advising on a broad spectrum of property-related matters.

She is a member of the Ghana Bar Association and holds an LLB with honours from the University of Ghana, Legon; a BL from the Ghana School of Law; called to the Ghana Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Ghana in 1983; and obtained an MBA from the Aston Business School, Aston University, Birmingham – UK.

Chairman of the Republic Bank (Ghana) PLC Board, Charles William Zwennes, commended her invaluable role as the bank’s Company Secretary, describing her as a strong woman of substance with impeccable integrity.

He then welcomed Mrs. Oduraa Botchway into the new position, assuring her of the Board’s commitment to accord the needed support and cooperation in discharging her duties.
