Vivo Energy Ghana has launched a campaign dubbed: ‘Stop, Think & Drive’ to further improve safety on roads.
The campaign seeks to improve road safety consciousness among high-risk commercial drivers and motorcyclist which will, in turn, provide enhanced and safer transport services to commuters.
It is expected to reach about 1,500 high-risk commercial drivers and motorcyclist across the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Bono East, Northern, Central and Western Regions with refresher training in defensive driving.
The drivers will also receive free eye screening as part of the programme.
Participants will be taken through a comprehensive driving training modules to help drivers become more inclined to road safety and lessen traffic crushes.
Speaking at the launch, Managing Director of Vivo Energy Ghana, Kader Maiga, said the annual programme will raise driver awareness, encourage attitudinal change, improve driving skills, and lessen traffic fatalities.
“There are bad road networks affecting safe driving, and there are irresponsible drivers on our roads. These problems exist but as commercial drivers, your attitude toward these problems should not be one of indiscipline; your attitudes and actions should be to protect and keep yourselves and others safe,” he said.
In Ghana, provisional statistics from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Ghana Police indicate that over 2,924 people were killed in road traffic accidents in 2021.
To help tackle the issue, he said Vivo Energy Ghana is committed to supporting the government, and partnering with respective authorities to curb the menace on roads through the Stop, Think & Drive annual road safety programme, adding that more drivers will be added to expand the reach.
He also urged all drivers and motorcyclists to make the most out of the refresher trainings to better equip them in discharging their daily activities and contribute toward making our roads safer.
