…sets to represent the country on the global front
Academic City University College has won the 2022 national General Electric Limited (GE) and Enactus Lean Challenge.
The competition, which forms part of the 2022 GE Global Lean Challenge is a unique project-based learning opportunity, where students master lean and design thinking concepts to identify innovative solutions.
Emerging first in the national competition, the Academic City University College representatives will represent Ghana at the 2022 GE Global Lean Challenge, competing with China, India and Brazil.
University of Development Studies (UDS) Tamale, Takoradi Technical University, and the University of Energy and Natural Resources came in second, third and fourth positions respectively.
The top three went home with US$1500, US$1000, and US$500 respectively for emerging winners; and each participant received certificates of participation and a US$50 stipend.
In all, 10 institutions participated and came out with innovative ideas and solutions to solve national and global problems in the energy sector.
The Country Director of Enactus Ghana, Baba Sayuti, highlighted in a speech that the solutions proposed by the students support the idea that there are intelligent young people who are creative problem-solvers, innovators and entrepreneurs, adding that these abilities must be utilised to support growth in specific industries in the country.
“It is exciting to see young people with such a strong passion to make a positive impact on our society. We usually say young people are the future of our continent because they carry inherent potentials that if properly discovered, developed and deployed, can take our nation into its desired glorious future. Solutions such as these are transforming economic activities,” he said.
According to him, given the difficulties young people encounter in entering the job market and getting quality skilled jobs, programmes such as the GE Lean Challenge is crucial.
“As key partners in economic development and job creation, we understand our critical role in helping shape the future of young people. We have done this over the years through several partnerships and initiatives with other partners such as GE. I believe the GE Lean Concept will broaden the scope of thinking of these students, and provide a platform for many of these students to solve complex solutions around the globe,” he said.
For his part, the Chief Executive Officer for GE Ghana, Sulemana Abubakar, advised the students to keep up the good work and incorporate the knowledge they had gained from the programme into their daily routines.
