Management of MTN Ghana is committed to improving on infrastructure to enhance quality network services for clients.

In view of this, the company has invested the building 120 new 2G and 3G sites as well as 607 new 4G sites, with 1,322 sites having been modernised in readiness for 5G technology. It also invested over GH¢200million in the country’s economy during 2021 as part of its corporate social responsibility.

Chief Corporate Services Officer of MTN Ghana, Samuel Koranteng, announced this at the 2021 Special Edition of MTN Editors’ Forum held at Tamale in the Northern Region. As part of the 25th year celebration, this year’s forum brought together media personnel from the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions to grace the occasion.

The media were taken through the company’s various businesses, then progress, challenges and measures taken to curb the challenges. They were also acknowledged for their tremendous contributions toward the company’s growth with their reportage.

Mr. Koranteng said the company persistently records hundreds of fibre-optic cable cuts, which is taking a toll on its operational expenses.

According to him, there were 1,605 fibre-optic cable cuts in 2020 and 1,684 in 2021 even though it’s still a month and a week to end of the year – saying the company’s fibre-optic cables are being cut by road contractors and other private developers in various parts of the country.

“The top-five regions leading in fibre-optic cable cutting include the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Eastern, Western and Oti Regions,” he said.

“For the period of 2019, it cost MTN Ghana GH¢8,281,000 to repair all recorded fibre-optic cables that were cut across the country. In 2020, we spent GH¢9,537,838 to repair those that were cut. The major cause of this fibre-optic cable cutting in each of the top-five regions mentioned earlier were road construction work, drain construction work and activities of private developers,” he explained.

The Chief Corporate Services Officer of MTN Ghana appealed for all stakeholders, including road contractors, to always try and inform them of any planned construction work to enable them forestall destruction to their fibre-optic cables buried underground along major roads and highways in various towns and cities across the country.

Nii Adotey Mingle, General Manager-Northern sector, said the company helps to enhance quality education in the country with the establishment of educational facilities. He said the company is committed in supporting government toward the digitisation programme, so as to enhance the economy and well-being of clients.

Area Sales Manager-Northern sector, Obed Amankwah, stressed the need for the clients to change their PINs regularly to avoid being detected by fraudsters. He urged the public to desist from releasing the PIN numbers to people who can use them to withdraw money without their consent. He encouraged the retailers and vendors not to engage in any illegal activities, and said that anyone caught doing so will be dealt with by the law.

Some media personnel were honoured for their long-lasting relationship with the company. The MTN Editors’ Forum is an annual programme that brings together editors and other senior journalists of various media houses including radio, television, newspaper and online. The programme creates a platform for management of MTN Ghana to receive feedback from journalists regarding operational challenges of the company.
