Management of Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Limited have assured Energy Minister Dr. Mattew Opoku Prempeh of full support and cooperation in the power sector.

The Director of Ghana’s largest independent power producer, Togbe Afede XIV, last week led a six-member delegation to pay a visit to the sector minister at his office in Accra. The purpose of the visit was to formally welcome and also brief him on the company’s profile and its operations in Ghana, together with its future plans.

Togbe Afede XIV said: “On behalf of the shareholders and management of Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Limited, we welcome you as the new sector leader and assure you of our full support and cooperation in the sector”.

He said the power firm has been operating a 560 megawatts combined cycle about a decade now, and is poised to power Ghana with renewable energy as it is set to roll out a new project as part of its expansion plan. He added that the project when completed will lead to a more competitive tariff, grid reliability and efficiency.

He said Shenzhen Energy, the mother company of Sunon Asogli, as a true development partner will not demand any guarantee or security from government when they venture into the renewable energy market.

Chairman of Sunon Asogli, Yang Qun, congratulated the minister on his new position and highlighted the need to plan ahead of the future surge in energy demand. “Sunon Asogli, with an in-depth study of Ghana’s power sector, recommends enhancement in capacity now as there are very clear signals of supply shortages in the next two to three years.”

Mr. Qun highlighted the fact that Sunon Asogli has not charged the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for the idle capacity worth US$250million since declaring commercial operations.

Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh said Sunon Asogli remains a longstanding partner in the country’s energy delivery, with its 560 megawatt plant occupying 15% of the market share and projects in several countries across Africa.

Its plans and proposals on renewable energy sources – such as wind, solar and waste-to-energy – are interesting projects and he indicated that he’ll look into its expansion plans and discuss the way forward accordingly.
