Letshego goes green

As part of its quest to promote a green economy and fight climate change, Letshego Ghana – a licenced financial services provider in Ghana – has acquired an electric vehicle ST SUV2 (Karry K60 EV) from SolarTaxi Limited.

Today, the transport sector contributes approximately one quarter of all energy-related carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere – which is set to reach one-third, growing faster than any other sector. Electrification of transportation is a crucial building block for a decarbonised future.

Ghana’s current installed capacity is over 4,600MW – which is significantly more than the current peak demand of about 2,700MW. At this current rate, Ghana will need to create demand within the system to take the excess supply of electricity.

As an energy-consuming technology, electric vehicles (EV) create a new demand for electricity that can make use of the excess power while enabling the introduction of renewables into the system. So, against this backdrop one might beg the question: why not progress along this trajectory and make the transition toward electric mobility?

Electric vehicles, as an innovative transportation alternative, have the potential to mitigate climate change and also provide affordable transportation for Ghanaians. By leveraging the energy from the sun and innovativeness of the shared economy, electric vehicles reduce carbon emissions, cost of delivery and transport services to individuals and businesses across the country.

The ST SUV2 (Karry K60 EV) from SolarTaxi Limited is a seven-seat electric vehicle that has a driving range of 301km with a maximum speed of 150km/h. It is a keyless engine start and has a (45.2kWh) battery capacity amounting to GH¢51 in electricity tariff per full charge (301km).

Business Associate at SolarTaxi, Tracy Solomon said: “We are very excited because Letshego Ghana Savings and Loans has decided to transition into being a permanent part of the SolarTaxi family by owning an Electric Vehicle today.
