Editorial: Upward adjustment in tariffs must result in better service delivery

As part of its quarterly review mechanism, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs effective 1st July 2025.

PURC says the upward review is necessary to sustain utility service providers and ensure a reliable electricity supply.

The Commission underscores that quarterly reviews are not arbitrary but are a necessary measure to maintain the real value of tariffs in the face of economic pressures and uphold the financial health of utility service providers.

However,  the PURC has confirmed that water tariffs will remain unchanged for the third quarter of 2025, maintaining a 0.00% adjustment rate.

Despite similar economic pressures, PURC beleves current water rates are sustainable for now… offering relief to consumers.

The Commission constantly justifies these adjustments, equating them with the real value of tariffs to uphold the utility’s financial health. That is granted, but what about the accompanying guaranteed service? Does it meet consumer satisfaction?

The  economy’s condition is always cited in such circumstances and consumers always readily comply to ensure seamless delivery – but is seamless delivery always the case?

We urge the Commission to fulfil its side of the bargain and ensure uninteruppted services. Ghanaians have long been loyal consumers and deserve to be rewarded adequately.

As indicated, the upward adjustment is to enable ECG provide better service – which would allow consumers to take the Commission at its word.
