The Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Mahama Abukari II, has paid a reciprocal visit to the palace of Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewusoale I.
The visit, which follows Yagbonwura’s courtesy call on the Dagbon kingdom in June 2024, was a symbolic gesture of mutual respect and a commitment to peace between the Dagbon and Gonja kingdoms. The event was marked by cultural displays, traditional performances and a strong call for unity among traditional rulers in the Northern, North East and Savannah Regions.
Led by a procession of 20 decorated horses, the Ya-Na’s arrival was met with excitement as residents of Dagbon and Gonjaland showcased their rich cultural heritage. Traditional drummers, dancers and warriors put on spirited performances while tourists and visitors witnessed the occasion’s grandeur.
Speaking at the palace, Ya-Na Mahama Abukari II commended Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewusoale I for setting a precedent in promoting peace and fostering unity. He reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the bond between the two royal houses, stressing that unity among chiefs is crucial for regional stability and development. “Our youth and traditional leaders must uphold peace and dialogue to resolve differences. Investors are watching developments in our regions and peace is key to attracting economic opportunities,” the Ya-Na stated.
Yagbonwura Soale I, in his remarks, lauded the Ya-Na for the historic visit and assured him of continued peaceful coexistence between their respective peoples. He reiterated the role of traditional leaders in serving as custodians of culture, mediators in disputes and symbols of authority, stressing that their unity will translate into development for their communities.
The event served as a call to action for traditional rulers across northern Ghana to prioritise peaceful dialogue over conflict, promote mutual respect and work together to enhance social and economic progress in their regions.
