Volkswagen Motorsport’s Jonathan Mogotsi has been crowned the 2024 South African Touring Cars (SATC) SupaCup champion.

Mogotsi secured the championship title with a calculated drive, finishing second overall at the South African National Extreme Festival at Zwartkops Raceway on Saturday.

It was a tough weekend for rookie teammate Charl Michael Visser, who still hung on to third in the championship, while the team’s Rookie Cup champion Kyle Visser clinched third in his maiden season of the Astron Energy Polo Cup.

Head of Volkswagen Motorsport, Mike Rowe, in an ecstatic mood, said: “We are SATC SupaCup champions. Well done to Jonathan on not just delivering on our trust in his abilities, but also for driving Volkswagen Motorsport to the title.”

He further commended the entire team for the spectacular teamwork “Every single one of us in the team is ecstatic and hugely proud of this achievement. Well done also to our SupaCup rookie, Charl Michael who was the best first-year driver in the series, and to our Astron Energy Polo Cup rookie Kyle. Not only did he dominate the rookie class, but Kyle ended a brilliant third overall in SA’s toughest young gun racing series,” he commended the stars.

On his part, Mogotsi, expressing his excitement and gratitude to the team said: “First and foremost, huge thanks to Volkswagen Motorsport for believing in me, and the incredible support over the past few seasons. I am just so proud to deliver this championship to my incredible team.”

Touching on his experience on the journey to the championship, he said: “I must admit that I was a bit nervous after only qualifying my Genuine Parts Volkswagen Motorsport SupaPolo fourth, and concerned after I got caught out on the first attempt to start the final and dropping into the pack. Fortunately, that race was red flagged and I kept out of trouble. For the rest, I just kept my rival in my sights to be sure of the title, even if it was by all of two points,”

SupaCup rookie Charl Michael Visser was happy with his rookie Polo Cup season despite a tough season finale. “I am happy with my season and to deliver the best rookie result in SupaCup 2024,” Charl Michael admitted “We won races, I was generally on the pace, and I am truly grateful for the experience I gained as I grew as a driver in my season with my Volkswagen Motorsport family.”

Younger Visser brother Kyle, who earned his Astron Energy Polo Cup drive by winning the 2023 Volkswagen Rookie Cup, was delighted to close off the season third overall in the championship with a dominant performance among the series rookies.

“I am beyond delighted to finish third overall in my maiden Polo Cup season, and to come home top rookie in the Astron Energy Polo Cup this season,” Kyle reflected.

He also conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to the Volkswagen Group for the opportunity. “I would like to thank Volkswagen Motorsport for this incredible opportunity, not just this year, but also for my Rookie Cup season last year, as we now look ahead to 2025. Onward and upward.”

The Volkswagen Motorsport Head sharing his general overview of this season’s performance said: “This achievement marks the perfect finale to an incredible season for Volkswagen Motorsport. All three of our drivers won their classes, Jonathan SupaCup overall, Charl was the best SupaCup rookie, and Kyle was the top Astron Energy Polo Cup rookie too. Congratulations to every one of our great racing family for your contribution to a great season. Well done,” he reiterated.
