Academic City explores cyber security, data science impact on future of work

Academic City University College – a tertiary institution offering degrees in Business, Communication, Arts, Engineering and IT – has held a thought-provoking discourse on the roles of data science and cyber security, with a call for effective collaboration between industry and academia to address the profound impact these fields are having on the future of work.

The event formed part of an open-day for the university’s new Master’s programmes in Data Science, Analytics and Cyber Security, and brought together diverse industry players and experts in these fields.

The panel discussion session underscored the significance of Data Science, Analytics and Cyber Security in the modern work environment, and highlighted Academic City’s innovative approach to higher education.



The panel featured seasoned experts in the two fields – including Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Listowell Vigbedor from the Ghana Police Service; Executive Director-Institute of ICT Professionals, David Gowu; Financial Crimes and AML Lead at E-Crime Bureau, Eric Mensah; Business Development and Account Manager at Farmerline, Marvin Nii Adom Armah; and CEO-Complete Farmer, Desmond Koney.

They shared their perspectives on how data science and cybersecurity are transforming and reshaping business operations. The discussion highlighted growing demand for data-driven solutions and robust cybersecurity measures across various sectors, emphasising the importance of equipping the next generation of professionals with skills necessary to thrive in this dynamic environment.

In addition, the experts discussed the challenges that the country is currently facing in terms of adapting to new technologies. They also put forward some suggestions on how to overcome these challenges.

Speaking at the session, President of Academic City, Prof. Fred McBagonluri said: “This conversation is vital as we navigate the future of work. Industry and academia collaboration is necessary to inform government decisions with the latest research and industry trends”.

He further said: “We designed our Master’s programmes in Data Science and Cyber Security with this in mind, integrating live projects and industry partnerships to provide students with hands-on experience”.

The Academic City Master’s programme in Cybersecurity, Data Science & Analytics are designed to equip graduates with advanced expertise, fostering critical analysis and practical skills to combat evolving digital threats, and the application of data science techniques for problem-solving and decision-making in real-world scenarios.
