The German Development Cooperation, in partnership with the European Union through the joint Action for Jobs, Migration and Development has presented five pick-up vehicles, furniture, office and Information Technology (IT) equipment to the Labour Department of the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations.
The move seeks to improve workplace quality and services delivery in 20 public employment centres in the Ashanti, Bono, Ahafo, Bono East and Greater Accra Regions.
It also aims to improve operational efficiency, enable better access to job counselling, employer engagements and job canvassing in remote areas.
At the handing over ceremony in Accra, Coordinator at GIZ Ghana’s Sustainable Economic Cluster, Wilhelm Hugo, emphasised the importance of this support in strengthening national, regional, and local stakeholder capacities.
“We are committed to supporting the Labour Department in delivering efficient and effective employment services. In this way, we are enhancing the operational capabilities of the department and promoting employment opportunities and economic growth across Ghana.
“This initiative demonstrates our strong partnership and shared vision for a robust labour market where every jobseeker has the support they need to succeed. We believe these efforts will pave the way for sustainable development and prosperity for all Ghanaians,” he stated.
For his part, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, commended the partnership and support as well as urged labour officers to take good care of the new resources and vehicles.
He reminded them that the resources are intended for official use only and not for personal activities, urging them to embrace a new attitude towards work, with the expectation of improved performance and service delivery.
“The support will greatly enhance our operational efficiency, enabling us to better serve the needs of both workers and employers,” he noted.
The acting Chief Labour Officer at the Labour Department, Alhaji Ibrahim Dauda added that the support would enable officers to better serve the needs of jobseekers and employers, ultimately boosting their performance and contributing to the promotion of decent work opportunities for the youth in Ghana.
Partnership
Through the partnership, there are also ongoing refurbishments set to enhance the overall functionality and aesthetics of the Public Employment Centers (PECs), promoting a professional and welcoming atmosphere.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to build in-house capacities within the Ghanaian labour administration, ensuring sustainability and continuity beyond the project cycle.
By equipping the Labour Department with these essential tools, the project aims to create a more dynamic and responsive employment service framework.
The project is an initiative by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), co-funded by the European Union and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in cooperation with the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations.
