Poetry Corner: Not the Way it Was

0

Two thousand years ago

In the year of our Lord

You used to be

Now you are sitting here

Sighing

Crying

Regressing

As your peers are

Climbing

Flying

Progressing

Could this be you?

You used to be

Now you are lingering about

Whining

Idling

As your peers are

Dinning

Grinning

Winning

Could this be you?

You used to be

Now you are gnashing your teeth

Lamenting

Wishing

As your peers are

Walking the streets

Complete

Could this be you?

You used to be

Now you are hoarsely complaining

Busily blaming

Fuming

As your peers are

Planning

Planting

Could this be you?

You used to be

Now you pay rapt attention

Open to suggestions

No hesitation

As your peers are

Rethinking

Retreating

Could this be you?

You used to be

Now you are on bended knee

Pleading

Entreating

Seeking to please

As your peers are

Seeking their pleasure

Pleasing at their leisure

Could this be you?

You used to be

Now you are falling

Steadily

Surely

As your peers are

Rising

Steadily

Certainly

Could this be you?

You used to be

Now you are saying sorry

Praying

Supplicating

As your peers are

Soaring

Prospering

Swearing to swerve past  your past

Could this be you?

You used to be

Now you are glorifying tattered clothes

Stitching

Patching

As your peers are

Designing

Posing

Changing wardrobes

Could this be you?

You used to be

Now you are sulking for losing only a farthing

Sobbing

Fainting

As your peers bathe in wealth

With mirth

Could this be you?

You used to be

Now you are hiding from your own

Ducking

Diving

Running away from ones you once saved from dying

Because you are now dying

Could this be you?

II

Is this evidence

Of a radical change?

When we thought you had it all wrapped up

Around your fingers

Change lingers

And lingers

Till it occurs

Inevitably
