Apiorkor and Kwanpa Band to star at Central University’s Literary event

Central University is set to stage yet another glitzy literary and musical event come tomorrow Wednesday 24th April at the Trinity Square, Miotso Campus.

Aptly named “Poetry Under the Eagle,” the music and poetry showpiece take place at the majestic eagle statue which forms a magnificent landmark of the University’s main campus. Now in its 5th year, the extracurricular activity involves performers from the general public, and aims to provide the platform for staff and students of the university to showcase their talents in poetry recitals, acting, song ministrations and other forms of art.

Last year’s show featured Chief Moomen of WogbeJeke fame, and the year before was Prof. Kofi Anyidoho a literary scholar, poet and Professor of English from the University of Ghana who serenaded the audience with nuggets of native wisdom in word and song. The event also saw the Vice Chancellor of Central University, Prof. Bill Puplampu performing some of his own poems to a delighted audience.

Under the theme, “God, Poetry and Song,” this year’s show will feature Apiorkor of WogbeJeke fame as the main Guest Performer. The Guest Poet is one of the most recognizable faces of performance poetry from Ghana, having sold off literary events at Kempinsky and Alisa Hotels as well as the National Theatre.

Apiorkor is a Ghanaian-American Poet, Writer/Author, Literary Scholar, Critic and Media Practitioner who been performing for the past 13 years on various national, corporate, social, entertainment and international platforms.

Apiorkor teaches, mentors and counsels Poets, Writers, Dancers, Musicians, Creatives & Culture

Enthusiasts, budding Media Practitioners and young people (especially young women).

As a Media Practitioner, Apiorkor is Multi-format/ Multi-scale Television Producer & Programmer, with over 20,000 hours of content, to her credit. She is also a Multi-format Radio Producer & Programmer. Additionally, she does Event design/ production/ management, Culture curation with a wide range of creative talent, and is a compère & moderator.

Apiorkor is the Head of Programmes Production at Accra-based Citi 97.3 FM and Citi TV. She also hosts “Diplomatic License” and “What’s Cooking?”

Backing the Guest Poet is Kwanpa Band, the multiple award winning, thriving and very dynamic indigenous band in Ghana that performs and promotes indigenous music of Africa in various forms. Their melodious interludes are expected to rock patrons on and off their seats in what promises to be a memorable night under the stars.

“Poetry under the Eagle” is held once every year and has become a feature in the social events’ calendar at Central University. For the first time, an exciting prelude event was held at Central university’s Christ Temple Campus.

“Poetry under the Eagle” is organised under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Creative Alliance, a vibrant creative arts group on Miotso campus. The event is envisioned to help promote the image of the university in addition to helping members of the university community relieve stress and develop their creative talents.
