GOIL Plc has presented a cheque for GH₵150,000 to the North Tongu Relief Fund to support the rehabilitation of the flood victims of the Akosombo dam spillage at a short ceremony in Accra.
The Group CEO/MD of GOIL Plc, Mr. Kwame Osei Prempeh, in the company of the management team, recalled the devastation caused by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam and the displacement of many residents in North Tongu and surrounding communities. He noted GOIL was moved by the deteriorating plight of the displaced residents and decided to donate to the fund. He believed the donation will go to the needy people especially, children and women.
The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Okudjeto Ablakwa, on behalf of the fund, expressed appreciation to GOIL for the support. Over 12,000 persons, he noted, were displaced as a result of the spillage, while 1,500 homes were damaged. He appealed for more assistance towards the resettlement of residents, hinting the funds will mainly be used towards the building of homes for the displaced. He appealed to GOIL to consider the construction of a filling station in the district.
The acting COO and Head of Operations of GOIL, Mr. Denis Amui, assured the delegation, the company would consider the request.
The District Chief Executive for North Tongu, Divine Osboruk Fenu, was grateful for the support from philanthropists and state-owned agencies like GOIL and appealed for more assistance for residents in the area.
In attendance was a delegation of chiefs and opinion leaders from the six affected communities in the North Tongu. They were Torgbe Kwashie Ababio IV, Volo Traditional Area; Torgbe Dzetekletsi III, Torgome Traditional Area; Torgbe Manklalo Agbohla VI, Dorfor Traditional Area; Mamaga Adzo Sreku IV, Paramount Queenmother of Battor Traditional Area. Also in attendance were Torghbe Wodzogli, Acting Paramount chief of mepe, Torgbe Kwadwo Adzagba the fourth, divisional chief of Mepe and Zikpritor Ganyo Bubu, stool father, Togbe Amanfu stool, Mepe.
Also present at the presentation ceremony was GOIL’s Management team including the MD of GO Energy, Mr Gyamfi Amanquah and the Group Chief Finance Officer, Mr. Kwabena Adjei
