The Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei- Opare, has described the FemPower outreach and scholarship programme introduced by the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) Power Queens Club as innovative, revolutionary and a very important career-developing approach.
“This initiative is going to give opportunity to female students who are now entering into university to be consciously nurtured into the right skills, such as engineering and computer engineering, in order to join ECG after they graduate,” she said.
She said this approach will encourage a lot of ladies to enter into the engineering space, especially since it is going to be scholarship-based.
Representing as the guest of honour, Mrs. Osei-Opare said this during an interview with journalists at the FemPower outreach and Scholarship programme launch in Accra.
The FemPower Outreach programme, under the ECG Power Queens Club (Women’s wing of ECG) auspices, is aimed at developing, grooming and building the capacity of more women to take up more leadership positions in the ECG; and also seeks to develop young females in the Engineering and Computer Science disciplines.
The FemPower project is two-fold: The FemPower and Leadership Scheme, wherein 150 ladies selected out of 573 who were nominated across the company will go through various mentorship and capacity building programmes to groom them into taking leadership positions in the company; while the FemPower Scholarship Scheme will sponsor and help develop 10 needy but brilliant female students in the engineering and computer science disciplines in the country’s public universities.
The Chief of Staff noted that even though the percentage of women holding leadership positions in the country is gradually improving, the need to consciously train and empower more women is essential.
She further commended ECG Power Queens Club for such a thoughtful initiative, and encouraged every woman in the sector to take advantage of the programme.
Leader of ECG Power Queens, Ms. Maataa Opare, indicated that FemPower aims at empowering more female electrical engineers across the country; increasing their numbers, sustaining the interest of women in STEM and increasing the number of women in leadership.
“FemPower is just not a concept, it is a commitment. Our call is not just for more women in engineering and leadership roles, but for qualified women who can contribute meaningfully to growth and success of the company.”
Managing Director-ECG, Samuel Dubik Mahama, in an interview also said that the development of women, especially in their careers, is very important to him; hence his support for the initiative.
