While we take for granted the technological divide between Africa and the so-called developed world, I happen to believe that the deliberate application of advanced technology could bridge that gap dramatically in the next 10 years.

This led me to ask myself a simple question. What advice will I give a 10-year-old African child who holds within her the potential to be at the forefront of technological revolutions that will redefine industries and societies?

This guide, albeit my opinion, is crafted as a roadmap, offering insights into the crucial areas of technology that can be explored and mastered today to pave the way for a future where these young individuals not only adapt to the evolving tech landscape but become the architects of transformative change.



I have always been especially impressed by the intellect that African children have displayed over the years and it is essential to recognise the power that lies in the hands of our budding tech enthusiasts.

With a focus on foundational skills ranging from coding and artificial intelligence to robotics and environmental tech, this guide aims to inspire curiosity, foster creativity, and instill a sense of purpose. By nurturing these talents from a young age, we can envision a future where the ingenuity of a 10-year-old African contributes significantly to the global technological narrative, creating solutions that address local challenges and resonate on a global scale.

Coding & programming languages

Here, I admit. I may be revealing my bias as a software developer; however, I believe learning how to communicate with computers plays a huge role in building logical reasoning skills.

These digital dialects serve as the building blocks of the technological landscape, allowing individuals to communicate with computers and instruct them on how to perform specific tasks. Starting with the basics is akin to providing a young mind with a linguistic toolkit, equipping them to articulate their thoughts in the language that machines understand.

Python, with its readability and versatility, serves as an excellent entry point, enabling children to grasp programming concepts without the burden of complex syntax.

JavaScript, a language commonly used for web development, opens the door to understanding the dynamic nature of interactive websites. Additionally, Scratch, a visual programming language designed for beginners, transforms coding into a playful and creative endeavour, fostering a love for problem-solving and logic.

Learning these languages not only imparts practical coding skills, but also instills a deeper comprehension of the logic underpinning software development. As these young learners navigate through the syntax and structures of these languages, they develop a problem-solving mindset, honing their ability to break down complex challenges into manageable components. This early exposure to coding lays the groundwork for future endeavours, allowing them to envision and construct innovative solutions to real-world problems. Educating young minds about the potential risks associated with digital interactions and the importance of safeguarding personal information creates a foundation for responsible and secure online behaviour.
