Marking its 60th Anniversary this year, the Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana (CIB Ghana) has launched an innovative executive chartered banker programme. Dr. Ernest Addison, FCIB, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, unveiled the new and innovative Chartered Banker for Executive Leadership (CBEL) programme.
The launch of CBEL coincided with the launch of the Institute’s 60th Anniversary event. The launch was well attended by other dignitaries such as the Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; former Minister for Finance, and Governor of Bank of Ghana, Dr Kwabena Duffuor; past presidents of the Institute, CEOs of various institutions, members and fellows of the Institute.
The CBEL programme, designed to meet the ever-evolving demands of the financial world, offers a flexible yet intensive curriculum. CIB Ghana, through the CBEL, aims at empowering senior executives with a unique blend of deep knowledge in core banking capabilities, ethics, professionalism and sustainability.
According to the CEO of the Institute, Robert Dzato, CBEL will broaden the perspectives of seasoned practitioners and equip them with strategic leadership, governance, and risk management competencies. “CBEL is a comprehensive chartered banker qualification that will aid leaders make sense of and thrive in an ever volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) operating environment,” he said.
Beyond its comprehensive content, CBEL provides a transformative journey for learners. It brings together seasoned thought leaders and learners in interactive in-person, virtual and peer learning environments. The programme involves career reflection, executive talk sessions, mentorship and coaching.
Aside the faculty of the Institute, some of the key facilitators of the CBEL programme include Chief Alhassan Andani, former CEO of Stanbic Bank; Albert Essien, former Group CEO of Ecobank; Professor Noel Tagoe, former Global Executive Vice President of CIMA; Bernard Otabil, Office of Ethics and Investigation at Bank of Ghana, among others.
One distinctive feature of the CBEL programme is the inclusion of a study tour to global financial centres. This is designed to offer experiential learning and develop a global mindset with local insights.
The curriculum, enriched by an integrated case study assessment approach, encourages participants to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios. This practical approach fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to make informed and ethical decisions, which are essential for navigating the complexities of the modern banking industry.
In essence, the Chartered Banker for Executive Leadership (CBEL) programme is a game-changer for those in or aspire to be in senior leadership positions and boards of financial institutions. The entry requirements include at least fifteen years’ experience in financial services, five of which must be at key management level. The programme is an accelerated route to the chartered banker status.
In his speech at the launch of CBEL, the Governor of Bank of Ghana, Dr Addison, said: “we commend CIB for this feat and encourage banks to participate in this programmes to enhance their knowledge and skills.”
