Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi Mine (AGA) has cut the sod for construction of an ultra-modern robotics centre at the Obuasi Senior High Technical School in Ashanti Region.
The facility is expected to be completed in the next eight months and estimated to cost about GH₵6million.
It will serve as a hub for innovation and technological growth, providing students in Obuasi with resources and opportunities to broaden their knowledge in artificial intelligence – particularly robotics.
Also, by providing students with innovative resources to empower them to thrive in the digital age, the robotics centre will enhance the interest of science-oriented schools within the municipality to establish robotic clubs to foster innovation.
AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine said the centre will nurture the next generation of tech-savvy individuals, who will contribute to the socio-economic development and growth of their communities by fostering innovation and having students embrace technology.
Speaking to journalists after the sod-cutting ceremony, Senior Manager-Sustainability, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Emmanuel Baidoo, said this groundbreaking initiative is part of the education pillar under the Obuasi Mine’s 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan, which has an intermediate goal to empower host communities through improved quality education.
“The robotics centre represents AngloGold Ashanti’s dedication to fostering a passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among students of our host communities.
“By investing in education, we strive to nurture talents of the future generation; equipping them with skills that will propel them toward successful careers and businesses, and contribute to the overall development of communities in our operational areas.
“Therefore, with this initiative, we aim to empower students with the necessary tools and knowledge to thrive in our ever-changing world while also contributing to the advancement of Obuasi as a whole,” added Mr. Baidoo.
The brief sod-cutting ceremony held at the Obuasi Senior High Technical School premises brought together representatives from the Municipal Assembly, Traditional Leaders, Ghana Education Service, teachers, students and representatives from the Obuasi Mine.
Municipal Director of Education, George Alred Koomson, noted that the facility when completed will go a long way to boost teaching and learning of robotics within the municipality.
“It has come at the right time, when the Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service is laying much emphasis on STEM education. The robotics centre is going to go a long way to help. In 2022, GSTEP, Obuasi municipality, presented eight teams; and out of that, we won three awards.
“The centre is going a long way to help schools in Obuasi. We have been made aware that when the project is completed, it will make room for both basic and second cycle schools to use the place,” he said.
