When the 2023 HR Focus Awards panel convened to evaluate leadership quality within Ghana’s oil and gas sector, they unanimously selected Tullow Ghana as the best organisation in HR Management.

This recognition is testament to a relentless focus by Tullow’s leadership on empowering and transforming its workplace culture and employee-relations in every aspect of its operations. The award also highlights the strides made by Tullow in pushing an agenda of inclusivity among its employees and stakeholders as it optimises Ghana’s oil and gas resources.

The commercial discovery of oil in 2007 threw a spotlight on the need to develop the country’s human resource as part of operations in the industry. Successive governments gave the mandate to operating companies to make people management and local participation a strategic focus.

As the main operator of Ghana’s major fields – Jubilee and TEN – Tullow has always carried the responsibility of providing leadership in this aspect. Today, the organisation’s hard work is paying off – more than 72% of its workforce are Ghanaians, with a 90% target in the next five years.

The company’s human resource unit operates with an urgency to make Tullow the best place to work within the industry. Recently, the organisation reviewed its internal culture values to reflect the need for employees to aim high, display ownership and authenticity.

Commenting on the award, HR Manager at Tullow Ghana, Kwame Ofori Afreh said:

“As a leading operator in Ghana’s evolving oil and gas sector, our people are our greatest asset; and we continue to adopt creative and innovative ways of ensuring they are empowered to be world-class. We are thrilled to be recognised by organisers of the HR Focus Awards – it means we cannot rest on our laurels. It is also an added incentive for us to constantly lead by example while pushing the boundaries of HR Management in the oil and gas sector. Great appreciation also goes to the HR team for their hard work and dedication.”

The HR Focus Awards event is a biennial awards scheme that recognises best practices in HR across the energy, financial, health, manufacturing, telecoms and media sectors of Ghana.
