…issued 8 weeks ultimatum
Hundreds of protestors in Ashaiman municipality within the Greater Accra Region have taken to the streets on Tuesday to register their displeasure against bad roads in the area.
The protest was staged by the Ashaiman Youth Association, including the drivers unions who were making a demand for the roads in the constituency to be fixed.
The protestors, cladded in red and black, blocked major streets and chanting “fix our roads”.
One of the conveyners of the demonstration, Freeman Tsekpo, an Assembly Man of Nii Amui Electoral Area, told the media that the deplorable state of the road is affecting them economically as they have to frequently visit the mechanic to service their vehicles.
According to him, most drivers are unable to meet their daily target wages, as well as traders.
He lamented, the government has done little to better the situation and they will continue demonstrating until they see works begin on the roads in Ashaiman.
Presenting their petition to the Mayor of Ashaiman, Mr. Tsekpo said ” the scene on the road has been a mirage leaving our health and cars at the mercy of the poor road”.
“Enough is enough. We can’t sit idle for our roads to keep killing us, destroying our businesses, reducing the life span of our vehicles and that of our income, inflating many serious health challenges”, Mr Tsekpo said.
He urged government to bring all contractors back to the roads, and that, if they are not seen in the next 8 weeks, they will hit the street again.
Mayor of Ashaiman, ABoakye Okyere, assured them their concerns will be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for immediate attention.
