Huawei to support tech talents with US$100k

The 2023 Huawei Seeds for the Future Program aimed at nurturing young Information Communication and Technology (ICT) talents for a sustainable digital future has officially started.

This year’s program is an 8-day intensive online training expected to benefit 70 female university students offering science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related courses.

Speaking at the official opening, Huawei Ghana’s deputy managing director, Kweku Essuman Quansah, indicated that since the initiative aimed at encouraging participants to make a tangible impact, his outfit will provide US$100,000 startup fund to support the project ideas of the top three teams.

He added that the outstanding students will also get the opportunity to attend the Startup Sprint event in China, to gain real-world business experience.

“Huawei, in pushing this agenda will provide a US$100,000 startup fund to support the project ideas of the top three groups. Huawei has in the space of two years, trained 80,000 young girls in relevant ICT courses and we are here once again to witness the opening of an initiative that underscores our commitment to fostering innovation, diversity, and collaboration,” he said.

The training scheduled for September 4 to September 11, 2023, will take participants through cutting-edge courses like 5G, AI, Digital Power and Cloud Computing and help build their leadership capabilities.

Beneficiaries will also be engaged in a mentorship and career guidance session providing them with insight from experienced industry professionals, as well as a Tech4Good campaign aimed at providing solutions to societal and environmental problems.

Huawei has over the past few years, prioritized the training of ICT talents across the globe, with the aim of addressing the widening industry skills gaps in the ICT industry.

In Ghana, Huawei have partnered with key ministries like the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and the Ministry of Information among others, to successfully deliver on its commitment to train more ICT talents for the country.

In an address, the Deputy Minister for Communication and Digitalization, Ama Pomaa Boateng reiterated that, it is imperative that more effort is channeled into strengthening the digital skills capacity of the future generation.

“Data from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) indicates that, “Tens of millions of future jobs will require far more advanced digital skills. As such skills become increasingly important for employment, substantial “talent gaps” may emerge between workers proficient with ICTs and those lacking it.

As a Ministry championing the “Girls in ICT” initiative, I am glad to say that this training, is a step in the right direction. The Ministry of Communications and Digitalization will continue to throw its weight behind such talent development initiatives for an inclusive and sustainable digital economy,” she said.

She also emphasised that the evolving digital landscape requires organisations to adapt and leverage technology to stay competitive.
