TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana in partnership with United Way Ghana has embarked on a coaching and reading session for pupils at Nima Cluster of Schools in the Ayawaso East municipality.

About 320 Junior High School pupils were engaged from three schools – Nima 1 Basic School, Nima 2 Basic School and Kanda Estates 1 Basic School.

This forms part of TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana and United Way Ghana’s shared commitment to support the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goals 4 – Quality Education, and 10 – Reduced Inequalities.

Executive Director at United Way Ghana, Felix Kissiedu-Addi stated in his remarks: “United Way Ghana values such partnerships whereby corporate employees take time off their busy schedules to spend time as role-models to these young learners. By leveraging the expertise and resources of corporate volunteers, interventions like these can make a significant difference in the lives of children from low-income homes – filling the gap of parental guidance and promoting their overall well-being and success”.

Human Resource Manager and Ethics Officer for TotalEnergies Ghana, Bright Dokosi, said in his remarks: “We are excited to embark on this programme, as we believe that the time and resources spent will have a positive impact on their lives”. He also thanked United Way Ghana for the fruitful partnership.

The Municipal Education Director for the Ayawaso East municipality, Madam Adiza Tassa, expressed her heartfelt appreciation to TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana PLC and United Way Ghana for the programme, and reiterated the need for continual coaching of young learners in schools.

“It is a very good programme and I would not trade it for anything. Coaching is very important, and I believe that your presence will bring about a positive change in the children’s lives.” She also urged the employee volunteers to exercise patience with young learners during their engagements with them, while expressing her appreciation to TotalEnergies Ghana for having the well-being of Ghanaian children at heart.

Children from underserved communities rarely obtain the much-needed parental guidance during their formative years. Systemic barriers and socioeconomic constraints can significantly impact parental guidance in low-income families, requiring comprehensive support and intervention to address these inequalities and complement the efforts of such parents to effectively guide their children’s development. Struggling to meet basic needs and worrying about financial instability can consume parents’ attention, making it difficult for them to focus on their children’s development and well-being.

To address the lack of or inadequate parental guidance among children from low-income homes, corporate volunteerism plays a crucial role. Companies can encourage their employees to engage in coaching programmes whereby they provide guidance and support to children in need. Corporate volunteers serve as positive role-models, offering guidance, encouragement and emotional support to children, helping them build resilience and develop life skills.

It is for this reason that employee volunteers from TotalEnergies Ghana engaged young learners at the Nima Cluster of Schools in a one-day coaching exercise. The young learners were engaged on key life-changing topics such as effective communication skills, negotiation skills and mind management skills, aimed at boosting their confidence levels and helping these young learners to effectively navigate life as students and responsible adults in the future.
