In line with its mandate of developing irrigation projects, the Chief Executive Officer of Bui Power Authority (BPA), Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, has led the authority to enter a partnership with Bui Sugar Limited, for the establishment of a sugarcane plantation and processing plant within the Bui Hydroelectric Project acquired lands.

The move is also to champion President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo’s industrialisation agenda, notably, One District One Factory (1D1F).

The 6,940-hectare plantation situated at Fawoman community in the Banda District, upon completion, will become the largest sugarcane plantation in the country. The processing plant is expected to process about 60,000 tonnes of sugar annually, and will be developed in four phases which will eventually result in a total production capacity of 100,000 metric tonnes annually.

The development of the irrigated sugarcane plantation within the Bui enclave is expected to create about 500 jobs for the local people, improve their economic life and livelihood, as well as reduce the high rate of rural-urban migration.

On his recent visit, Mr. Dzamesi expressed excitement about the progress of work as in just nine months, about 130 hectares of land have been cultivated, and more lands are being prepared for planting. He commended the developer for the zeal and commitment shown toward the project, and applauded them for engaging about 120 workers from the neighbouring communities at this initial stages.

Mr. Dzamesi has assured the authority’s continuous support by creating the enabling environment for the factory and plantation to thrive. He took the opportunity to invite other investors and businesses to set their operations within the Bui enclave to develop the area while they make the needed returns on their investments.

The Bui Power Authority was established by an Act of Parliament, Act 740, with the mandate to construct a dam at the Bui gorge and utilise about 184,371 hectares of land for the dam’s operations, development of irrigation projects, and the development of the Bui township. The Bui Hydroelectric Project was, thus, a vehicle to spur industrialisation of the area, and to improve the economic well-being and livelihood of the people within the Bui enclave and the nation.
