Universal Merchant Bank opened its doors for business in 1972, as the Merchant Bank of Ghana. The bank was established as a specialized policy bank to provide indigenous merchant and wholesale banking capacity to the Ghanaian economy.

The Bank actively pursued this mandate, becoming a significant solutions provider for institutions and organizations in the economy. In the process, the Bank pioneered, innovated and achieved many milestones.

On 15th March 1972, the bank opened its doors to the public as the premier merchant bank in Ghana and transitioned into a full universal bank and began a retail banking operation.

Subsequently, in 2014, Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), which at the time had majority shares in the Bank offloaded its shares Fortiz Private Equity Fund and the Bank rebranded to the Universal Merchant Bank (UMB).
