Republic Bank refurbishes AU Square

Republic Bank Ghana, a subsidiary of Republic Financial Holdings Limited, has refurbished the Africa Union Square located on Independence Avenue, Ridge, in Accra. The refurbished AU Square was inaugurated on Friday, January 28, 2022.

Speaking on the rationale for adoption and refurbishment of the AU Square, Managing Director of Republic Bank, Mr. Farid Antar, said refurbishing AU Square is in line with the bank’s CSR strategy of supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on Climate Action (SDG 13) and the bank’s vision for Africa.

“Our long-term vision is to establish an African presence headquartered in Ghana. There’s no better place for Republic Court to be situated than near the iconic Africa Union Square. Whenever we look across the street, we just do not just see AU Square; we see hope, our African dream. And in pursuit of this dream, we have adopted the AU Square for greening, maintenance and beautification.”

Opening the refurbished AU Square was carried out by Special Advisor to the President Yaw Osafo-Maafo. In his remarks, he acknowledged and appreciated Republic Bank’s partnership in Accra’s beautification project with its adoption of Africa Union Square for greening and maintenance. “This Square is a symbolic representation of Ghana’s commitment to African Unity and Pan-Africanism. Evidently, I can see lots of progress at the AU Square. Thank you for supporting the agenda and showing love to Ghana. The upliftment of this important site will also uplift our spirits in pursuit of our African Unity,” Mr. Osafo-Maafo added.

Speaking on its adoption of AU Square, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, also commended the bank for the gesture and applauded its Management team for the partnership to green and make Accra City clean. “As you know, I am a campaigner for a cleaner and more orderly city of Accra. Using this Ridge roundabout enclave to Parliament House and seeing the work done in and around AU Square gets me more motivated to keep moving on the campaign. We will surely get there,” the Regional Minister added.

Present at the event were notable dignitaries including: Accra Mayor, Elizabeth Sackey; the Regional Police Commander and the Municipal Chief Executive-Korle Klottey, Adjei Tawiah. Others included the Trinidad and Tobago Consulate, Honorary Consul Hilton John Mitchell; Board Chairman of Republic Bank (Ghana) PLC, Mr. Charles William Zwennes; the Managing Director, Mr. Farid Antar; Directors of the Republic Bank and Executive Management and Staff of Republic Bank (Ghana) PLC.
