Leaders of Centre for International Maritime Affairs, Ghana (CIMAG) have commended the creation of the Ports Journalist Network (PJN), a group made up of journalists who have been reporting on the maritime sector over the years.

The officials expressed optimism that the network will serve the interest of Ghana’s maritime community, giving special attention to the impact of the industry by reporting on relevant issues and conducting research to improve the sector.

This was brought to light last Friday in a meeting as part of the introduction procedures of the newly created network to stakeholders of the sector, of which CIMAG is among.

Secretary of the network who led the group, Josephine Antwi -Adjei, reiterated the media’s role to the sector, stressing that collaborating to address maritime and port industry issues is critical.

She further noted that as a strategic partner in the drive to promote and project the industry as a research think-tank organization, CIMAG is better positioned to share its findings with the network to enable them also share with the maritime community.

This, she said, would help project the industry, adding that, maritime journalists report can influence policy, therefore stressing the need for journalists to report accurately on the issues.

Senior Research Fellow for Ocean Governance and Maritime Law, John Mark Nunana Esq, expressed his willingness to fully collaborate with the network to execute the plans.

Giving a background of CIMAG, the Executive Director, Albert Derrick Fiatui, said the organization was founded as a non-partisan institution to advance policy thinking on pressing maritime issues linked to the blue economic challenges.

The centre also provides the industry with a platform for policymakers and other stakeholders to engage with players from the maritime business community, as well as for networking, and creating awareness through quality research and advocacy work.
