GIADEC pays courtesy call on B&FT

The leadership of Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) have paid a courtesy call on the management of Business and Financial Times (B&FT).

The GIADEC delegation led by its CEO, Michael Ansah, included Charles B. Janney, Director, Human Resource and Administration; and Kojo Yankah, Executive Assistant/Head of CEO’s office.

In a comprehensive presentation to the B&FT, GIADEC noted that its strategic plan for a comprehensive development of an integrated aluminium industry has been identified by government as one of the major pillars for transformation of the Ghanaian economy, which will ultimately move Ghana Beyond Aid.



The in-depth presentation spelt out why and when the GIADEC was established through an Act of Parliament, its master plan for the aluminium industry, enabling infrastructure, as well as the environmental and community considerations that will support it.

The presentation also touched on bauxite deposits, existing operations and industrial facilities under the master plan – including new mines, refineries and smelter. Then it added other infrastructure projects that tie-in with the aluminium industry, including railways, power, roads and ports.

Mr. Ansah informed B&FT management of GIADEC’s mission to promote and develop a fully integrated aluminium industry in Ghana and its vision to be the leading integrated aluminium company in Africa, creating sustainable value for stakeholders and differentiated by cost-effective and safe, environmentally sound operations.

When asked about the issues being raised by civil society organisations (CSOs) with regard to mining in the Atewa Forest, Mr. Ansah noted that the GIADEC is committed to the use of modern technology in mining bauxite to ensure minimal impact to the environment and local communities.

“We have been in constant communication and engagement with the CSOs, community leaders and traditional heads in all affected communities – including Kyebi, Awaso, Nyinahin and Mpasaaso. We also adhere to Ghana EPA standards, Equator Principles, International Finance Corporation Performance Standards, Aluminium Stewardship Initiative Performance Standards and International Aluminium Institute’s ‘Sustainable Bauxite Mining Guidelines’,” he said.

Chief Executive Officer of the B&FT, Dr. Godwin Acquaye, assured the leadership of GIADEC support from the media organisation in helping to champion its agenda. “We at the B&FT are ready to support you achieve your aims and objectives.
