The Children’s Ward of the Tamale Central Hospital and some health facilities in the Northern Region are in dire need of renovation to ensure quality healthcare delivery. The hospital, since its inception, has not undergone any major rehabilitation as its structures deteriorate – creating a challenge in health care delivery, particularly at the Children’s Ward.
Other facilities that need rehabilitation are the male and female wards, emergency unit, maternity wards among others. Despite some efforts made by government, individuals and corporate organizations, the hospital workers say there must be a major rehabilitation of the facility to boost their morale.
Head of Department of the Paediatric Unit at Tamale Central Hospital, Lukman Amadu, lamented about the infrastructure status of the hospital when the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), as part of its contribution towards National Chocolate Day, presented five packs of Rasta malt and three boxes of liquid soap to the Children’s Ward.
“We at the hospital always ensure that patients brought to the facility receive the best medical attention with the few logistics available,” he said – stressing that management is also doing its best to provide the needed resources. He therefore appealed for support in the rehabilitation of some hospital infrastructure, especially the Children’s and Maternity wards.
COVID-19
“We as health workers have well composed ourselves by utilising the little resources available to ensure all adhere to the COVID-19 safety protocols to avoid spread of the virus. In as much as we want to protect ourselves, we equally want to make sure that the patients are also safe,” he added, noting that staff have been embarking on sensitisation exercises within the health facility.

Mr. Amadu expressed gratitude to the GTA for its support, saying: “The gesture will go a long way to boost the morale of staff, parents and the children”. Quality Assurance officer at GTA, Frank Owusu, said the authority is committed to promoting the industry to attract more investors and tourists so as to help create more job opportunities.
