The Pharmacy Department of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) at the University for Development Studies (UDS) has over the weekend embarked on a massive clean-up exercise to pave way for academic work.
The exercise, in collaboration with the Pharmacy Students Association of Ghana UDS chapter, was also used to sensitize students on the effects of COVID-19 and the need for all to help prevent the spread of the virus on campus.
The department, as part of its social responsibilities, has so far produced over 3,000 units of 250 millimeters plastic bottles of hand sanitizers meant for distribution to members of the university community including staff and students, communities within and around the university and certain key institutions across northern Ghana.
The cleanup exercise took place at the faculty and some lecture halls and some parts of the campus saw the students weed and clear gutters.
A senior lecturer at the department Evans Paul Kwame Ameade said the department, aside training the students for the health sector and teaching them the need to eschew indiscipline, inculcates the spirit of patriotism in them.
He added that the outbreak of the pandemic and the Teacher and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) strike also called for rampant cleaning of the school premises and the place of study to ensure students, lectures and staffs are safe to work within the environment.
According to the Presidents of the Pharmacy Students Association, UDS branch, Nyarfo Kelvin, embarking on the exercise would not only enable them to contribute to the eradication of communicable diseases, prevention of the spread of virus but also inculcate in them a sense of responsibility. “We must all aid the cleaners on our various campuses to clean the environment on weekends if possible to get rid of all filth as students,” he said.
