Radford University College (RUC) has launched its annual Graduate Fashion Show at an impressive ceremony on the university campus in Accra.

The launch attracted a large number of passers-by, and was to showcase the creative abilities of some students in the Fashion Design Department of the university.

In a speech, the Executive Chairman of the university, Nana Dwomo Sarpong, said the fashion industry is huge and competitive – which requires much creativity and capital. He explained that at the inception of the university, it carefully decided to offer a degree for graduates in this field to make it the first university that offers degrees in fashion-design and turn out human resource requirements for the booming industry and for national development.

Nana Dwomo Sarpong said on completion of their degree course, the graduates will not find themselves unemployed but rather be self-employed and create their own employment avenues.

He disclosed that Ghana has huge potential in this regard, since it has abundant historical symbols that can enrich our design patterns. “There is a ready market for our products which can find their way into the international market by adding colour to our designs,” he stressed.

He urged government to add more days to the sole Friday-wear, and also urged the President of the Republic to ask his ministers to wear more local fabrics as he himself has been doing. This will enable more local designs to get into the public domain.

Nana Sarpong urged the government to set up a factory in one of the districts to be sole responsible for sowing public school uniforms. This he said, will create more jobs for the unemployed graduates and it may fall under One District, One Factory concept.

Present at the ceremony were, Dr. Paul Effah, President, Head of Fashion Design Department, Stephen Adamtey, Maxwell Owusu Twum, Registrar all of the university and other dignitaries.

The main objective of the show is to enable the students blend their academic and creative abilities and the theme  was “Studying out of the box”. The annual main event comes off at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra on 26th May, 2018. In all 22 students exhibited their real talents.
