The year 2017 will probably go down as one of the grimmest years in the history of football in Ghana, as the national team-the Black Stars, failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup to be held in Russia this June. The locally based Black Stars (Black Stars B), also failed to make it to the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN 2018) in Morocco, after failing to overcome Burkina Faso in the two legs.
That said; here are three Ghanaian footballers who offer a lot of hope for the country’s football future.
Dauda Mohammed
For those who think the future of Ghana football is doomed, Mohammed is one of many young players whose development signals a bright future ahead.
The 20-year-old’s performance for his club’s u-21 side has received rave reviews across the football world. His performance recently prompted the coaches of Anderlecht to promote him to the first team.
The budding striker, who can also play in an attacking midfield role, is certainly one for the future, and it will be interesting to see how his career unfolds in 2018.
Godfred Donsah (Bologna)
Whether he stays with Bologna beyond this January transfer market, or not remains to be seen. However, what is certain about the young Ghanaian midfielder is that he is one of the country’s most promising stars in Europe.
The 21-year-old former Cagliari man has so far been making waves in the Italian Serie A where he has scored two goals in 19 appearances for his club.
His incredible performance has not gone unnoticed, as Italian giants Inter Milan, AS Roma, A.C. Milan, Lazio and Torino are among a host of teams, interested in the skilful midfielder.
English Premier League side, Arsenal, are also reported to be monitoring Donsah’s situation at Bologna.
Wherever he decides to play his football, he would be worth monitoring as he continues to develop his game.
Richmond Boakye (Red Star Belgrade)
At one point time written off as a wasted talent, Boakye has rejuvenated his career in the best possible way since moving to Red Star Belgrade in the Serbian League.
His dazzling goal scoring form has attracted a host of European clubs, including current English champions, Chelsea that are said to be frontline runners for the signature of the attacker.
The 24-year-old has already publicly declared his desire to reunite with Manager, Antonio Conte, having worked together at Juventus before.
With Alvaro Morata finding the schedule in England ever burdensome, and his strike rival Michy Batshuayi not trusted enough, a move for a striker, and that matter Boakye, looks increasingly likely to happen in the coming weeks.
With 18 goals in 19 matches in all competitions for his club, Boakye is in the best form of his career, and it is easy to understand why Chelsea, along with a number of Italian clubs, are interested in acquiring his service.
Boakye, who turns 25 on the 28th of this month, will definitely be one Ghanaian player to look out for this year.
