Unichem expands operation after receiving greenlight from LUEX U.K.

Unichem Ghana Group receives the Greenlight from LUEX U.K. for its new production plant Unichem Industries. The new facility which is located in Spintex, one of the manufacturing enclaves in Accra has been several years in the making and will help ramp up local production for Unichem to serve the nation.

The continent’s focus on supporting the growth of the local pharmaceutical sectors amid the pandemic has seen Unichem Ghana Group unveil this news at the ideal time. Public Relation Director of Unichem Ghana Group, Nana Yaw explained “Our mission is to provide the highest quality medicines throughout Ghana abd beyond- ensuring affordability, quality, integrity and efficacy “.

The new facility includes three (3) separate divisions – Liquids, Ointments and Tablets / Capsules. These specifications will enable the site to be a unique, one of its kind in West Africa and will also help to improve Unichem Ghana Group supply chain, thereby accelerate the supply of reputed LUEX products and new breakthrough medicines to patients across Africa.

LUEX U.K. has over one hundred key products across all major therapeutic categories. Currently, it is directly and indirectly present in over twenty (20) countries and has over fifteen (15) manufacturing partnerships with WHO-c GMP sites of high standards of quality compliance.

Unichem Group has been delivering healthcare in Africa for over 60 years was primarily established as a chosen marketing and distribution entity for the Global MNC’s like Pfizer, Boots, Sanofi but to name a few. Having started local manufacturing in 2008 under license of LUEX U.K. it now seeks to grow the portfolio percentage of drugs manufactured locally appreciably. This would be transformative and in line with the Ghanaian government initiative to boost local manufacturing which seeks to promote local drug manufacturing. This facility will also help service other African nations where LUEX is present with proudly Made in Ghana Quality Pharmaceuticals.

Senior Superintendent Pharmacist, Emmanuel Effah, who has been with the group for over 25 years has highlighted that Unichem’s ethics on quality is what has taken the group so many years to get this plant off the ground.

“It’s been a long road but with patience and faith, we’re close to localizing the same Quality Products coming from LUEX U.K right here in Ghana. “We target to create new employment across all segments of Pharma manufacturing from Quality Assurance Executives all the way down to packers on the production floors.

Unichem Ghana Group have been awarded as number one in OTC Pharma Distributor in the country over recent years and with this expansion and development of the new plant, it will no doubt provide the group with flexibility, collaboration & innovation, evolving their capabilities to ensure a solid delivery of quality medicines, from manufacturing, logistics, distribution and then onto the end consumer.
