The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has started processes to construct a new terminal building for the Kumasi Airport to bring the facility up to international standards and ensure the comfort of passengers at the facility.
In a Request For Expression of Interest published on Wednesday, January 31, 2018, titled: “Design Review and Construction Supervisor of the Development of Kumasi Airport Phase 2,” the airport operator is seeking to extend the runway, construct a new apron, a link taxiway, install airfield lightening and undertake other ancillary facilities.
The expansion of the facility has become imperative since the existing terminal building, designed to handle just a few thousands, now handle more passengers than it was originally designed for.
The decision to construct a new terminal is also to ready it for regional flights from Kumasi to the sub-region, following firm interests shown by regional airlines to operate flights from the Ashanti Regional capital.
The Ashanti Region is the most populous and one of the fastest-growing regions in the country. Its population, as at the last census, was 3,612,950, representing 19.1 per cent of the country’s population.
Kumasi, regional capital, has historically been an important reference for the use of Adinkra symbols and craftsmanship. With sprawling vegetation cover, the city is an important tourist destination noted for its commerce, mining and handicrafts.
Over the past two decades there has been rapid growth in commercial activities in the city, chiefly because of its ideal location in the middle-belt of the country. After Accra, Kumasi is the second-largest city in Ghana in terms of size and population.
Traders, farmers and cattle owners from Brong Ahafo and the northern parts of Ghana bring their wares to large markets in Kumasi to sell every day.
