A member of the COVID-19 National Response Team, Dr. Da Costa Aboagye, has expressed the conviction that the country is making significant progress against the COVID-19 battle.

According to Dr. Aboagye, the rate of active cases keep declining.

Speaking in an interview recently, he observed that the country’s active case count has been declining over the past weeks, and attributes same to the hard work of health officials together with government and citizen’s support.

Hence, we have all contributed to this positive assessment. In saying so, however, does not mean we must loosen our guard but rather, always comply with the safety measures to curb the spread of the virus.

While we bask in the news that the country’s active case count is on a downward trajectory, it is important to note that as at the time of going to press, the current COVID-19 case count has increased to 41,003, following the detection of 470 new cases.

According to the Ghana Health Service on its website on Sunday, 9th August 2020, 38,330 persons have so far recovered from the virus while active cases stand at 2,458. However, nine new deaths have also been recorded, pushing the death toll to 215.

Meanwhile, the leader of the coronavirus burial team, Inspector Joseph Asitanga, has described as, overwhelming the number of bodies they have in the morgues awaiting burial.

Speaking to the press shortly after the burial of six bodies at the Awudome cemetery late last week, Mr. Asitanga cautioned the public against what he observed as a disregard for the Covid-19 protocols, indicating that the virus is real.

He said the situation is getting out of hand and that the burial team is having a tough time dealing with the number. Therefore, while we receive the information that the country is making progress in containing the spread of the virus, we must equally remain vigilant and always remember to observe the health protocols until we have been instructed to ease them.

It is pleasing to hear that we are making progress in the fight against COVID-19, but we believe we must still behave as if the virus is still with us, and continue to observe the requisite health protocols and stay safe.

The virus, we learn, can be quite tricky and if we haste to relax our guard; it has the tendency to mutate into something different and could pose more problems.
